About us

State law enforcement agency for South Carolina responsible for: (1) the investigation of organized criminal activities or combined state-federal interstate criminal activities, all general criminal investigations, arson investigation and emergency event management pertaining to explosive devices; (2) the maintenance and operation of a statewide comprehensive forensic sciences laboratory; (3) covert investigation of illegal activities pertaining to and the interdiction of narcotics and other illicit substances; (4) operation and maintenance of a central, statewide criminal justice data base and data communication system; (5) establishment and operation of highly specialized, tactical response law enforcement units within the division; (6) operation and regulation of state polygraph examination services; (7) law enforcement, regulation enforcement, and inspections under Title 61; (8) the coordination of counter terrorism efforts, including prevention against, preparation for, response to, and crisis management of acts of terrorism, in or affecting this State; coordination of federal grants associated with homeland security; creation of councils appropriate to its mission; and service as the Governor's representative to the United States Department of Homeland Security; and (9) other activities not inconsistent with the mission of the division or otherwise proscribed by law.

Make arrests, searches and seizures, conduct surveillance of criminal suspects, and organize and manage case load. -Report Information: Consult with supervisor concerning new investigations and significant events related to on-going active investigations. Prepares accurate, thorough, complete, and grammatically correct reports of investigations, reports of interviews, statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documents. Present investigative findings to the court through testimony, as required. -Support Local and State Agencies: Develop professional relationships with local law enforcement agencies, coroners, and other local and state agencies to build relationships that will foster a positive work environment and support the overall mission of SLED and the Child Death Investigation Task Forces (CDITF).   • Representatives from South Carolina water and wastewater facilities, electric cooperatives, and local municipalities joined South Carolina Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (SC CIC) to participate in the inaugural Water Cyber War Games this week. Exercise participants served as digital foot soldiers who battled thorugh four simulations of possible cyber attacks. Facilitated by OTM Cyber, a cybersecurity defense company, the Water Cyber War Games immersed participants into realistic scenarios to test their cyber incident response capabilities as they battled for control of South Carolina’s water and wastewater facilities. “By working together and using real-world simulations, we continued our efforts to ensure South Carolina’s water systems remain secure, adaptive, and prepared for future cyber threats,” said Ryan Truskey, Chief Information Officer and Director of the South Carolina Critical Infrastructure and Cybersecurity (SC CIC) at SLED. This event was hosted by SC CIC in response to the recent efforts by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the state of South Carolina to increase the cybersecurity posture of water and wastewater facilities. SC CIC would like to extend a special thank you to OTM Cyber, SC Rural Water Association, SC Emergency Management Division, and SCAWWA/WEASC for their collaboration with the event.
