Feeling the Olympic Spirit: The 2024 Paris Olympics have arrived, with all eyes on the French capitol as the world's best athletes go for the gold in 329 events spread across 32 different sports. In all, approximately 10,500 athletes representing 205 delegations will compete in this year's Olympic Games, including the #RGV own all-star swimmer, Shaine Casas, who'll represent Team USA when he competes in the Men's 200m Individual Medley. To demonstrate their Olympic spirit, South Texas Health System Edinburg & STHS Children's staff members wore shirts, jerseys and accessories to show their support for their favorite country. While the majority rocked their Team USA attire, there were some who showed their love for Mexico and other countries. Despite nations rooting for their own athletes, the Olympics have always had the power of bringing the world together. "The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play," per the International Olympic Committee. South Texas Health System is proud to sponsor the official 2024 Summer Olympics Medal Count on NBC 23 and ValleyCentral.com, which will be tracking every country's gold, silver and bronze medals to see which country takes home the most medals.

  • Overcoming Back-to-School Jitters: As a new school year approaches, campuses across the nation are expecting a record number of first-time students following previous-year highs. While starting preschool is a major milestone, it often triggers anxiety, uncertainty and tears in children. It’s normal for children to demonstrate separation anxiety in early childhood, since parents are their “safe base,” and they’ll naturally feel a little unsure about leaving you. But having the right coping strategies can make the difference when it comes to separation anxiety for first-time students. South Texas Health System recommends the following: 🎒 Explain the routines of preschool 🙂 Normalize anxiety 🪁 Practice being apart 🏫 Visit the campus before school starts 🧸 Give your child a transitional object 🙋 Establish a goodbye ritual 😃 Keep a positive mindset For more information on back-to-school jitters, check out our latest South Texas Health Minute on ValleyCentral.com bit.ly/3Wnhvwp

  • Helping Educate Law Enforcement on Effective Crisis Intervention: Public safety professionals encounter high levels of stress and trauma when responding to critical incidents. Its vital first responders act quickly, but also sensibly, when dealing with a crisis in order to avoid escalating an already tense situation. An estimated 20% of police calls for service involve a mental health crisis, according to the American Psychological Association, and that number is increasing. So, law enforcement agencies are partnering with mental health experts for crisis intervention training. To help local members of the Texas Highway Patrol better understand the differences and nuances of mental health issues of individuals who may be in crisis to avert escalation, STHS Behavioral’s Director of Utilization Review, Bob Cooper, LCSW, provided a special training on Crisis Intervention Response & Strategies this week as part of the Texas Department of Public Safety's ongoing training efforts. Cooper highlighted prevention, intervention and deescalation techniques that first responders can use to better respond to a mental health crisis. Thank you, Texas Department of Public Safety, for allowing STHS Behavioral to share our expertise with your troopers to better respond to people experiencing crises in a way that promotes positive outcomes.
