From the physical safety of our patients, their families and our staff to the cybersecurity of records and medication, safety is a top priority for South Texas Health System. Whether the concerns involve violence, patient safety, emergency management, infection control or cybersecurity, our STHS security and information security (IS) teams are trained at every level. This Healthcare Security & Safety Week, STHS would like to recognize the efforts of our facility-based security and systemwide IS employees for their important work in keeping our patients, visitors and staff safe at our 12 facilities and for protecting patient and staff information in all forms. Our sincerest gratitude to our security and IS all-stars for their 'round-the-clock protection!

Celebrating Milestone Accomplishments: For more than 30 years, South Texas Health System Behavioral has served as the largest inpatient program offering individualized treatment for a wide range of behavioral health conditions and addictive disorders. While STHS Behavioral has met the behavioral health needs of our community throughout the years, the facility has accomplished some major milestones in 2024, including reaching a daily patient census of 100+, a record for the facility, and a 27% increase in the facility's average daily census over last year, which highlights STHS Behavioral's commitment to providing quality, compassionate behavioral healthcare for the community. Additionally, the facility was recently named a 2024 Reader’s Choice Award winner, graced the cover of Socialife magazine and hosted its 40th monthly Let's Talk Mental Health webinar to help South Texas residents prioritize their mental well-being. STHS Behavioral leaders hosted a special celebration last week to thank staff for their hard work in helping community members improve their mental health through the facility's inpatient, outpatient and community outreach and education efforts. Thank you, STHS Behavioral staff, for all you do to help meet the behavioral health needs of the communities we serve.

  • Celebrating a Special Homecoming: South Texas Health System is pleased to welcome Dr. Miguel Rodriguez, board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery, to the South Texas Health System Clinics team of physicians. A graduate of Sharyland High School, Dr. Rodriguez completed his undergraduate studies at Baylor University, attended medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and completed a general surgery residency with the Sunrise Health GME Consortium in Nevada. In July, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Gastrointestinal & Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic before joining STHS Clinics in September. “In the month that I've been practicing here, I can see there's a great need for general surgery, as well as specialty care," says Dr. Rodriguez. "I'm honored to join STHS Clinics and be able to help provide surgical services to my community locally, so they don't have to leave the Rio Grande Valley for treatment.” Welcome, Dr. Rodriguez, to the STHS family!

  • Uniting to Support Victims & Help End an Epidemic: Domestic violence impacts women nationwide, with the CDC recognizing domestic violence as a public health issue. An estimated 41% of women experience physical violence, sexual violence or stalking by an intimate partner. In the Rio Grande Valley, Mujeres Unidas aims to help women affected by domestic violence. Last week, South Texas Health System joined local law enforcement organizations, the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office and several community organizations for the 31st annual Mujeres Unidas Candlelight Vigil, which commemorates the lives lost to domestic violence and honors survivors. Representatives from the STHS Trauma & Critical Care Institute were on hand to help raise important awareness on domestic violence and share resources with the community about STHS McAllen's Trauma Survivors Network support group. Thank you, Mujeres Unidas, for the important work you do to help end domestic violence in our community.

  • Recognizing a Physical Therapy All-Star: South Texas Health System is proud of the contributions of our physical therapists in creating positive patient outcomes. Among our physical therapy all-stars is Berenice Hatfield, a lead physical therapy assistant at STHS McAllen. Berenice, who has worked with STHS for the last five years, recently took on the role of lead PTA, which allows her to be the go-to person for her team and help resolve issues that may arise. Beyond her new responsibilities, she loves caring for patients and seeing their progress. “I get to see them at the beginning when we have to be so cautious and determined simultaneously, but then we push from there and we get to witness how surprisingly fragile people are but also how incredibly strong and resilient we are as humans,” she says. And she's proud to work for a company that provides important education to the entire community, not just its patients. “The care we provide goes beyond our buildings," says Berenice. "There's outreach and care that goes further than these walls – that's why I love being a part of STHS.” Congratulations, Berenice, on your expanded role at STHS and thank you for the diligent care you provide to our patients.

  • Dedicated to Protecting Patients, Employees & The Community: Four years after a global pandemic, the important role infection preventionists play to keep the public safe from infections is undeniable, especially in a hospital setting. This International Infection Prevention Week, South Texas Health System is saluting the dedicated team of infection control coordinators across our facilities who protect patients, hospital visitors, our 3,500+ employees and the community from infectious diseases. Working closely with various hospital departments, our infection preventionists have created a network of individuals who can quickly tackle any potential or rising situation to help keep our patients and the entire community safe from infections, including the threat of influenza and other respiratory illnesses, which increases during the winter months. Thank you to our infection prevention team for your commitment to helping prevent the spread of dangerous diseases within our facilities and ensuring the health and safety of our patients.

Most vapes contain nicotine, a highly addictive compound found in tobacco that can affect brain development. Tune in tomorrow, October 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., via the STHS Children’s or STHS Facebook page to watch the live broadcast. • Commemorating Mammo Mondays: When discovered early and in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%, per the American Cancer Society. Getting routine screenings and mammograms is an essential part of early detection methods that allow for more treatment options. The most important screening test for breast cancer is a mammogram, which can detect breast cancer up to five years before the tumor can be felt by you or your doctor, per health experts. This National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, South Texas Health System is hosting Mammo Mondays across our facilities with mammogram services to promote the importance of early detection. Happening every Monday from 8 am to 5 pm at STHS McAllen, STHS Edinburg, STHS ER Mission and STHS ER Weslaco, our Mammo Mondays are a way for Valley residents to learn about different breast cancer screening options, schedule an appointment and take home a small token of appreciation. Throughout October, STHS is also providing mammograms at a reduced cash price: 2D Mammogram: $100 3D Mammogram: $155 Bone Density Screening: $155 For more information on our Think Pink campaign, visit https://lnkd.in/dkVsDYYr.

  • A Monster Bash with a Purpose: Last week, the South Texas Health System McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center hosted a spooktacular Halloween themed bash for the STHS Stroke Survivor Support Group. Members of the support group and their families/caregivers had the opportunity to play Halloween Bingo, Mummy Wrap and Pass the Pumpkin, fun physical therapy exercise-based activities that allowed stroke survivors to work on regaining skills lost after their stroke. Additionally, the STHS McAllen Stroke Department gave a presentation on the importance maintaining proper glucose levels to prevent or delay diabetes, a major risk factor for stroke. In addition to providing a welcome distraction and important education, events like this allow members of the stroke support group to continue working to improve their motor skills, range of motion and mobility. The support group, which meets monthly, is open to all stroke survivors and their family members. If you're interested in attending a stroke support group meeting, visit the STHS Facebook Events page to see the upcoming meeting dates.
