About us

About: SYRCL (pronounced “circle”) is the leading voice for the protection and restoration of the Yuba River and the Greater Yuba Watershed. Founded in 1983 through a rural, grassroots campaign to defend the South Yuba River from proposed hydropower dams, SYRCL has developed into a vibrant community organization with over 3,500 members and volunteers based in Nevada City, CA. Mission: SYRCL unites the community to protect and restore the Yuba River. Motivated by our love for this watershed, we advocate powerfully, engage in active stewardship, educate the public, and inspire activism from the Sierra to the sea.

During the slower times of day, the role can include basic admin tasks like data entry, mail sorting, and stuffing envelopes. Depending on each volunteer’s interest and ability, we have the option of working up to more complex projects.

  • WHAT IN THE WATERSHED? Meet Collinsia tinctoria, commonly known as sticky Chinese houses or tincture plant! This stunning flowering plant is native to California, thriving in the woodlands and forests of the central and northern mountain ranges. Description: Collinsia tinctoria is an annual herb that can grow up to 60 cm tall, featuring sturdy, erect stems. Its triangular, lance-shaped leaves are arranged oppositely and may have toothed edges, with hairy undersides adding to its unique texture. Flowers: The plant boasts beautiful inflorescences made up of dense whorls of flowers, each held on upright pedicels. The flowers are adorned with five elongated sepals and come in a range of colors—white, yellow, or deep lavender—often with mottled or speckled patterns, particularly in the throat. Many parts of the flowers are also glandular and hairy, contributing to their charm. Photo by Claire Woods
