  • On Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, the SDDOT is scheduled to install an all-way stop at the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and U.S. Highway 18, which is located north of Yankton and just east of Menno. Currently, traffic is only required to stop on Highway 18. “Safety on our roadways is our number one priority,” said Greg Rothschadl, Yankton Area Engineer. “The decision to add all-way stop controls, rumble strips, and advanced warning signage featuring flashing beacons, will advance safety on our roadways for the traveling public.” Travelers are asked to be aware of crews working in the intersection on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, and to the permanent change to the traffic conditions. Dakota Traffic Services of Tea, SD, will grind the rumble strips and place the pavement marking for this installation. #SDDOT #SD511

  • SDDOT employees continually go above and beyond the duties requested of them when it comes to assisting the general public. It brings us great joy when folks reach out to the SDDOT to share their stories of how our employees helped them in a time of need. One of these instances happened recently with Pat Gednalske (left) and Tom Mahar (right), Highway Maintenance Workers from the Custer area. A motorist named Kathy shared the below story: "I was stranded on U.S. Highway 16A (Iron Mountain Road) at the 2nd south pigtail bridge at 11:30 am on Thursday, July 25, 2024. Two workers from SDDOT stopped and helped me to get a tow truck after several failed attempts. They talked to the tow truck people to make sure they knew my exact location and how to get there. And they made sure I was safe from the heat. I can’t express the gratitude I have for them. Thank you SDDOT for having such terrific employees." Pat and Tom's effort to assist a member of the public in need is a great example of truly going above and beyond to provide excellent service for the traveling public! #SDDOT #SD511

  • During the week of Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed lanes of the U.S. Highway 81 grading project between 302nd Street and 306th Street north of Yankton. The traffic switch will shift two-way traffic onto the newly built lanes to allow for construction to begin on the remainder of the project. Traffic flow will require multiple lane shifts to direct the traveling public through the work zone. The lane widths will be a maximum of 10 ft.-wide, including shoulders. Overwidth vehicles will be required to use the designated detour route located on S.D. Highway 50, S.D. Highway 25, and S.D. Highway 46. The traveling public should also be aware that 303rd Street will be closed to thru traffic from Highway 81 to the SW Jim River Road until the point in time that traffic can be directed onto the newly constructed lanes. Traffic speed will be reduced to 45 mph through the length of the project. Spot flagging and pilot car operations may be required where work is being done adjacent to the newly constructed lanes. • The last couple weeks have been extremely busy for SDDOT staff with the added responsibilities of welcoming thousands upon thousands of travelers to our state for the Sturgis Rally. Our SDDOT staff members spend months preparing the infrastructure to handle the high traffic volumes that we experience on our state highways during the Sturgis Rally. "Thank you to all staff who played a role in making safety a top priority for our fellow citizens and guests alike during the Rally. Your hard work behind the scenes does not go unnoticed!" - SDDOT Secretary of Transportation, Joel Jundt. The SDDOT would also like to thank the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and all our fellow state agency partners who work side-by-side with us during the Rally and throughout the year. You can find a full Sturgis Rally report (including traffic counts across the greater Black Hills area) on the SDDOT website at https://lnkd.in/gNtT5Cqc. #SDDOT #SD511

  • With back-to-school activities in full swing and summer winding down, winter weather will be here in a couple of short months. The National Weather Service offices serving South Dakota will simplify some hazard names beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. The changes will be: Wind Chill Watch ➡️ Extreme Cold Watch Wind Chill Warning ➡️ Extreme Cold Warning Wind Chill Advisory ➡️ Cold Weather Advisory The primary reason for the change is to account for the cold and the fact that cold weather itself, with or without the wind, which can be dangerous and even life threatening.
