Updates

  • Beginning Monday, July 29, 2024, two-way traffic will be shifted into the northbound lanes of Interstate 190 in Rapid City. This change will result in the I-190 southbound exit ramp to North Street (exit 1C) to be closed and the northbound on-ramp to I-190 from North Street to be reopened. The traffic switch is anticipated to be completed over two days and be fully converted to the northbound lanes on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, and will not require the Interstate to be closed at any time during these operations. This lane shift is part of an ongoing bridge replacement project that consists of mainline work on I-190 and replacement of the Anamosa Street Bridge. The project completion date is Friday, Nov. 22, 2024. Find additional information on the project website at https://lnkd.in/gSK7xce8. #SDDOT #SD511

  • Beginning Monday, July 29, 2024, crews will begin chip seal, fog seal, and flush seal projects on portions of several highways in central South Dakota. To view a full list of project locations and timelines, please read the full press release at: https://lnkd.in/gK3zgzZf. On two-way highways, traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. On divided highways, traffic will be reduced to one lane as operations are conducted. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours. Loose gravel will be present on all projects for a period of 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic is advised to travel 40 miles per hour or the posted speed limit if it is less than the advised speed. Permanent pavement striping is scheduled to be applied 14 days after the chip seal and fog seal completion on each project. The overall project completion date is Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. #SDDOT #SD511

  • Due to the increased traffic volumes expected during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will activate temporary traffic signals at multiple locations in the Black Hills area. The traffic signals will be in full operation from Tuesday, July 30, 2024, through the end-of-day on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024. • All construction activities on U.S. Highway 385 will be paused for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from Wednesday, July 31, 2024, through end-of-day on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024. During this timeframe, all lanes will be open to traffic. The road surface from S.D. Highway 44 to Lake Pactola will be a type of sealed rock that resembles asphalt with lane markings painted onto it. In addition to the road markings, there will be a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 385 and Highway 44. There will be one and one-half miles of gravel surfacing from Highway 44 to one-half mile north of Silver City Road and a 1,000-feet-long gravel diversion immediately south of the Pennington-Lawrence County line. Both lengths of gravel will be treated to control dust. Both the sealed rock surface and the temporary gravel surfacing may become slippery when wet, so drivers are advised to use caution in the event of inclement weather. The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), the contractor, and South Dakota Highway Patrol will be actively monitoring road conditions within project limits for the duration of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The speed limit through the project construction area is reduced to 45 mph. For those driving through the Highway 385 project, or any construction project, the SDDOT reminds travelers to reduce their speed and exercise extra caution to safely manage changing roadway conditions. The recommended alternate route for drivers wanting to avoid the construction project on Highway 385 is U.S. Highway 16 and Interstate 90 through Rapid City.
