Southern Joint Replacement Institute is devoted to the treatment of patients needing primary and revision total joint replacement of the hip, knee and shoulder. Our mission is to provide state-of-the-art care in a professional and compassionate environment, while honoring a commitment to research and education in the field of total joint arthroplasty. All six physicians are board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic specialists in the field of joint replacement surgery and orthopedic surgery. The group prides themselves on offering personalized, patient-centered care and service. Our orthopedic specialists focus on increasing patient understanding and alleviating patient anxiety from joint replacement surgery through education. Whether you are recovering from a total knee replacement or a partial shoulder replacement, our goal is to minimize each patient's recovery time.   • Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Christie for being recognized by the Arthritis Foundation of Tennessee as an "Emerging Leader In Arthritis Care." He and other medical professionals will receive an award at the 2024 AF Dinner of Champions, on Thursday, September 19th at The Factory at Franklin. Dr. Matthew Christie, MD has been a true innovator in the field of orthopedics. Returning to middle Tennessee in 2021 to join his father in practice at Southern Joint Replacement Institute, Dr. Christie has had a arduous academic road. After graduating from Montgomery Bell Academy, he attended Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in chemistry in 2009. After a two-year hiatus, one spent in Iowa researching the genetics of kidney disease and another in Nepal working at a rural health clinic, Matthew traveled up to the University of Virginia for medical school, graduating in 2015 with his Doctor of Medicine. He matched in orthopaedic surgery residency close at home at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he eventually met his wife, Courtney. After a year in fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City honing his hip and knee replacement practice under some of the country's experts, Matthew moved back to Nashville to join SJRI. Dr. Christie specializes in hip and knee arthroplasty, with a particular interest in complex primary and revision reconstructive surgery. He is active in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee surgeons, for which he evaluates the fields latest research as a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty. His innovative work includes a number of orthopedic trials which has led to advancements in the field of joint replacement. He is a big supporter of the Walk Strong Foundation which helps those across the globe have access to joint replacement while also enhancing existing programs in those areas.   • Get to know Dr. Jeffrey T. Hodrick. Originally from Shamokin, Pennsylvania, Dr. Hodrick earned a B.S. in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy from Duke University, where he played varsity football from 1993 to 1997, serving as captain of the team in 1997. He was named ACC All-Academic in 1996 and 1997, and ACC All-Conference in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Jeffrey T. Hodrick, MD received his M.D. from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center where he received the Duke University Health System Strength Hope and Caring award in 2006. Additionally, Dr. Hodrick completed a Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Dr. Hodrick has a special interest in joint replacement surgery of the knee and hip along with utilizing new technologies to perform them. He is a leading spokesperson for robotic-arm assisted surgery and helps train other physicians in this area across the nation. He is also very involved in supporting the Walk Strong Foundation along with the other physicians at SJRI.
