Celebrating an 80-Year Legacy of Moving Science
About us
Southern Research is a nonprofit, translational scientific research organization with an 80-year legacy of moving science through drug discovery, drug development and environmental health. This legacy includes helping shape modern cancer treatment practices by developing seven FDA-approved cancer drugs and co-creating a COVID-19 vaccine currently in clinical trials. These innovations are made possible because of our greatest assets, our people that move science every day at every level of Southern Research.

As part of the Birmingham Biotechnology Hub, we are ready to continue providing safe and secure resources for biotech needs. Read more from our President and CEO, Josh Carpenter:
As Congress considers how to protect American intellectual property through BIOSECURE, we should also invest in domestic capacity—especially in places that already have the ingredients to flourish as major contributors to the nation’s bio economy. The good news is that Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines program, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Tech Hubs initiative have already identified and invested in promising places throughout the country. We just need to keep going. This is the argument Joe Parilla, my colleague at The Brookings Institution, and I make in our piece in The Hill today:
