Also known as #DayoftheDead, the Mexican holiday provides an opportunity for a temporary reunion between families and relatives who have passed on. 🕯️ According to tradition, the gates of heaven open for loved ones to return and be celebrated throughout November 1st and 2nd. People in Mexico celebrate through food, drink, music, and other festivities as they honor their returning family members. ⚰️ #FelizDiaDeLosMuertos

💡 #SomosSouthwestKey: Martha A. Lopez is an Assistant Program Director at Casa Lighthouse in #Phoenix, AZ. She greatly values the opportunity to be in a role that serves a higher purpose. Martha says, “I define myself as a survivor and use my lived experiences to ground me and anchor me to my work. I have a passion for what I do because I can understand the hardships of the children we serve. I hope to be a glimmer of light in their journey.” 🌅 She refers to her mom as one of her biggest inspirations for her valuable advice and perspective. 👩✨ Martha says, “She’s a survivor and a warrior. She’s an immigrant who never went to school and yet is so wise. She has an unmatched work ethic and constantly shares her wisdom and life lessons with me.” Martha acknowledges that sometimes, the work can sometimes be difficult but attests that it’s always worth it. She says, “I want staff to know that during the hard work we all do, there are a ton of people that are here to support and to provide the tools that are needed to feel confident and capable.” 💪#SomosSWKey #WeAreSouthwestKey

🌈 #LGBTHistoryMonth: Justice Mary Yu is the first Asian, Latina, and member of the LGBTQ+ community to be on the Washington State Supreme Court. Her parents’ backgrounds from Mexican farmland and Chinese factory labor helped to inform her outlook on the world. Justice Yu refers to her diversity in perspectives as being foundational to how she can best serve others. Justice Yu says, “I believe different perspectives make our courts better. The more robust debate, the better our decisions.” #LGBTQ #LGBTPride 🏳️🌈

✨#SomosSouthwestKey: Tabitha Daniels is the Program Director for Functional Family Therapy (FFT) based in Atlanta. Her passion shines through her dedication to helping families navigate challenges and achieve positive outcomes. 👪 One family in particular left a lasting impression on Tabitha. She shares, "They started the FFT process with little motivation for change and were initially resistant to any form of counseling. However, over time, they became one of the most engaged and receptive families I've ever worked with.” Tabitha recalls after they completed the program, they successfully applied the skills they learned in their daily lives. “The youth eventually graduated from high school and landed their dream job." 🎒 When asked for advice for others in the field, Tabitha emphasized the importance of self-care. "Always take a moment to breathe and practice self-care," she advises.
