SAM staff spent some time during our staff meeting delving into the history of Spartanburg's Southside neighborhood with Brad Steineke, of the Spartanburg County Public Libraries, author, community leader, and former statehouse Rep. Brenda Lee Pryce, and Dr. Jim Neighbors, of Wofford College, in advance of the launch of the book, North of Main. North of Main, the story of how the neighborhoods north of Main Street emerged as emancipated Black men and women spent their hard-won post-slavery wages to purchase lots and build homes. North of Main tells the stories of these families who worked in these early neighborhoods and is a sequel to the 2005 Hub City Press book, South of Main. A book launch will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapman Cultural Center. The public is welcome to attend.

SAM is a nonprofit organization and a county-wide movement to improve outcomes for ALL children.
About us
The Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, funded by private donors and grants. The Spartanburg Academic Movement is also a community action initiative – the action of aligning the work of all sectors in our community toward a shared vision of success for all our students. The process used for both the organization and initiative is collaborative action informed by data-driven local research, and the application of continuous improvement strategies to actions taken. SAM uses local data and research to identify where to draw local resources and action into areas in need of support within the cradle to career educational continuum through which our students travel. Our goal is that Spartanburg County Students will reach proficiency in the knowledge and skills needed for them to have economic freedom and mobility in the career field of their choice and live fulfilling lives as strong citizens.
