Dr. Tânia Bachega: Champion for CAH Newborn Screening
Meet Dr. Tania Bachega, a leading advocate for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (#CAH) testing in Brazil. Through her efforts, CAH testing was successfully implemented in the Brazilian Newborn Screening Program, helping countless newborns and families receive an early diagnosis.
Understanding the need for patient support within the CAH community, Dr. Bachega played a pivotal role as a scientific consultant in helping two of her patients establish the Brazilian Addisonian Association. This nonprofit now supports over 2,000 members, providing essential resources for patients and families affected by adrenal insufficiency across Brazil. In addition to her groundbreaking research, Dr. Bachega recently secured a parliamentary amendment to increase the production of hydrocortisone—a life-saving medication for CAH patients—at the Hospital das Clínicas.
Her dedication to advancing CAH research and patient care has earned her a prestigious award from the I-CAH Registry, recognizing her contributions to improving global knowledge and clinical care. Most recently, she was awarded the highest honor from SLEP (Latin American Society of Pediatric Endocrinology), acknowledging the significant public health impact of her work in CAH.
It is a privilege to be working alongside the CARES Foundation, Inc. in advancing research and, ultimately, life-changing treatments for people living with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (#CAH). Thank you for your ongoing support and education of the disorder for the CAH community.
