In 2022, when we presented this award to our founder Barbara Harman, we named it after her in recognition of people in the philanthropic sector going above and beyond to impact their local community. This year, we are thrilled to honor Hanh Le and Temi F. Bennett, Esq., Co-CEOs of iF, A Foundation for Radical Possibility, as our 2024 Barbara Harman Changemakers in Philanthropy. Their ongoing leadership at iF, with its commitment to practicing and modeling community-centered philanthropy, is transformational in our region. Please join us in celebrating them and fellow Changemaker honorees (announcement coming soon!) on October 30, 2024 at 6pm at Hook Hall. https://lnkd.in/gAY6pBQQ

Twice a year, New Futures invests in systemically excluded young people in the Greater Washington region who plan to pursue an associate degree or professional certification. As the economy and workforce change, half of all positions filled in the next five years will require some postsecondary credentials but less than a bachelor’s degree. New Futures is the only organization in this region with an intentional focus on postsecondary credentials outside the traditional four-year college model, building a pipeline to high-growth industries and financial well-being. Today, hear from advisor Katie and Scholar Ahnaf about their New Futures experience! Learn more by visiting https://lnkd.in/eY9VPQTJ and sign up to get a Taste of New Futures on October 4.

"Volunteering wouldn’t solve these problems, but given what we know about volunteering’s benefits, it seems it could certainly help. One University of Oxford researcher surveyed over 45,000 employees whose companies offered wellness benefits like massage classes, coaching sessions, and mindfulness workshops. The only option that seemed to actually have a positive effect on well-being, the study found, were those jobs that provided workers with opportunities for charity or volunteering." Sharing a great Vox piece by Rachel Cohen reflecting on the value of individual action. https://lnkd.in/di3knfbn

We don't often talk about estate planning, but August is National Make-A-Will Month, so we'd like to help dispel some myths about how to make a will! Read through for more answers and a helpful resource you can use, but the gist of it is: ❌ You don't necessarily need a lawyer. The majority of Americans write their own wills. ❌ Unless you live in Louisiana, you do not need to notarize a will and file it at the courthouse for it to be valid. ❌ Making a will does not have to be expensive. You can use online resources to easily create your will in under an hour. ✅ When making a will, leaving a bequest to a nonprofit of your choice can be a powerful way to make an impact for the causes you support.
