About us
Founded by Fred R. Smith in 1949 as Bellingham Stevedoring Company, we began our first cargo handling operations in a small corner of Washington State. Driven by a pioneering spirit, our family-owned company saw steady growth over the years, expanding up and down the West Coast to operate a significant market share of the major international terminals in the eastern Pacific. Today, we have become a global enterprise spanning more than 260 locations across five continents. We continue to broaden our reach by developing new locations and upgrading existing facilities, providing some of the most technologically advanced facilities in the world. We partner to move commerce with efficiency, flexibility, and integrity. With operations across five continents and a vast network of interconnected transportation solutions, we open new opportunities that accelerate the growth and pace of global business. Improving the customer experience is at the heart of everything we do, so we make purposeful investments in people, facilities and technical innovations that deliver the greatest customer value.

Highlights: 🔹 Chief Operating Officer James Bennett joined tenants Crowley, SSA Marine and Enstructure LLC to discuss how public-private partnerships are upgrading terminal infrastructure and building the port of the future. 🔹 Director of Business Development Alberto Cabrera, CTL moderated a panel about how the region’s rail providers are powering eco-friendly options for cargo movement. 🔹 University of North Florida student Cameron Myers thanked the Transportation & Logistics Council for awarding him their 2023 scholarship and discussed his experience transitioning between cargo and the classroom during his time as an intern in JAXPORT’s Marketing Department. Chief Commercial Officer Robert Peek, MPA, CTL summed up the event in his closing remarks, “This evolution into a major transportation and logistics center is not happening overnight or by chance. SSA Marine MIT has added six new electrified automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) to its operations, increasing the terminal’s efficiency while reducing carbon emissions. “One of the main benefits of these automated cranes is their energy efficiency. They consume less energy than previous equipment and are designed to minimize CO2 emissions," said Manuel A. Pinzón, General Manager of SSA Marine MIT. “This renovation is aligned with our commitment to reduce environmental impact and move towards a more sustainable port, which not only benefits the operation itself, but also the community and the environment. The decision to invest in these cranes was a strategic one.” #sustainability #optimization #carbonreduction #ports #innovation
