March is Women's History Month and we honor trailblazing women in medicine who paved the way for generations of healthcare professionals. Dr. Mary Bennett Ritter (1860-1949) received her MD in 1886 from Cooper Medical College, the predecessor to Stanford University’s School of Medicine. She was instrumental in creating one of the first networks of female physicians in the Bay Area, focusing on women's health and empowering women to thrive in a time of limited professional opportunities. We also celebrate Dr. Adelaide Brown (1868-1939), a public health advocate who earned her MD from the same institution. Her dedication to improving healthcare for California women had a lasting impact, not just at Stanford, but across the state. You can explore her personal papers at the Medical History Center in Lane Medical Library. These pioneering women helped shape the future of healthcare, and we are proud to continue their legacy at Stanford Health Care.
