About us

The d.school is a hub for innovators at Stanford. Students and faculty in engineering, medicine, business, law, the humanities, sciences, and education find their way here to take on the world’s messy problems together. Human values are at the heart of our collaborative approach. We focus on creating spectacularly transformative learning experiences. Along the way, our students develop a process for producing creative solutions to even the most complex challenges they tackle. This is the core of what we do.

Some highlights from our fall “Discover the Major Night” earlier this month at the d.school. This evening was designed to be a fun and informational event for both prospective and current design students to get to know the program, learn about the latest program updates, and meet with faculty and student advisors. This gathering also kicked off “Discover the Major Week,” which involved domain-themed community gatherings that provided great opportunities for exploring interests around design’s impact in the world, getting to know the different domain options available in the design programs, and connecting with fellow majors and domain leads! To learn more about our Domain Coursework, visit the link in comments. #design #MSdesign #designthinking #humancentereddesign #highered

Had the most amazing time at The Stanford d.school Design Literary Festival last week. Do I have enough books already? Did I fly from Chicago to San Francisco just for this? Would I be wealthy were it not for books? Did I fill my suitcase with more books? Is this how I use my vacation time? Am I a nerd? All yes. But surrounding yourself with interesting people, places, and things is one of the fundamentals of a creative practice - and our public services and the social issues we tackle need more people with more exposure to more ideas about imagining and designing a better future for everyone. ♥️

You never know what you’ll discover on your walk!☀️ Today, while wandering around Stanford University’s campus, I stumbled upon a large crowd and realized it was the first-ever Design Literary Festival hosted by The Stanford d.school 📚✨ As a part of University Innovation Fellows, it was an excellent opportunity to connect with d.school authors and students. It was inspiring to see how design intersects with literature, leading to rich discussions on social impact, problem-solving, leadership, and the future of design. I especially loved the hands-on maker activities, which let us dive into the creative process alongside the authors! 🖌️🤝 #DesignThinking #Innovation

We recently hosted a fascinating discussion at Stanford Research Park featuring Carissa Carter and Scott Doorley from The Stanford d.school, focused on their book, Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future. The event explored how intentional, thoughtful design can help shape a future prioritizing resilience and well-being amid rapid technological change. Participants engaged with the book’s themes on balancing innovation with responsibility, taking away practical insights for navigating modern design challenges. Carter and Doorley’s perspectives brought Assembling Tomorrow to life, sparking meaningful conversations on crafting a future that meets the demands of our evolving world.

A small glimpse of the Print on Purpose exhibition currently on display at the Stanford Center for Teaching and Learning. From the exhibition: "The exhibition is a visual voice of students from the Fall 2022 and 2023 cohorts of DESIGN 236P / AFRICAAM 235, 'Print on Purpose.' As you explore this artwork, you'll see it is far more than a collection of words and images submitted as final assignments. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of print—a medium that has long narrated stories of resistance, resilience, and revolution. From humble lawn signs and provocative pamphlets to defiant newspapers, print remains a catalyst for discourse and change. Each student responded to the same prompt: harness the informational, empowering, and lasting power of print to explore a conversation you want to learn more about, feel you are an expert on, or believe others need to hear. The result— a collection rooted in the students' personal stories, experiences, reflections, and bold attempts to wield the power of print. The journey to these final compositions was one of exploration. We delved into the nuances of print and visual communication, embracing critique and feedback as vital tools for shaping ideas and fostering growth. We created zines, experimented with screen printing, carved linocut prints, explored the Black Graphic Design Collection at Green Library, and learned from experts about the art and craft of storytelling through print. These works hold more than just fonts and images-they carry a mission: to amplify the unheard and make visible what is often unseen. 'Print on Purpose' is a call to action. We created with intention, printed with intention, and now invite you to engage with intention. Let this artwork challenge your perceptions, spark curiosity, and inspire you to leave your own mark on the world."
