Reflecting on September 14, 1994, I find myself filled with nostalgia. On this day, we received our Certificate of Incorporation from the State of New York, marking the moment I transitioned from a career in financial services to a new adventure. I never imagined that three decades later, I would have so many memories to share—so many incredible moments to cherish alongside numerous team members, some still with us and others who have moved on, but all of whom remain friends. This is what I fondly call “The Magic of Starbright.”
In those early days, I embarked on a journey as a one-person operation with a vision. My goal was to introduce a fresh approach to the floral industry, one that prioritized customer service above all else. Operating solely on my own, I creatively maximized every dollar, handling everything myself—from taking orders on my cell phone during commutes to actively engaging with potential clients face-to-face. My marketing strategy was unconventional and grassroots; I was the face of Starbright at every turn. It was an exhilarating time as customer satisfaction soared, signaling the end of our experimental phase—Starbright was officially a reality! Now, the focus was on building a team.
We started with two, then grew to five, then ten, and eventually thirty and then more. With each milestone, our reputation as “The Official Florist of the City That Never Sleeps” became more tangible. Over the next decade, we relocated to larger spaces twice, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hospitality Industry of NYC, and celebrated countless other achievements. We earned the trust of major corporations, hoteliers, and event planners. Starbright became the coveted florist of New York City.
Now, thirty years later, I am truly in awe of our team and what we have accomplished. Twenty years ago, my son Stephen joined me as a business partner. What some might refer to as the Next Generation, I see as the Now Generation, as he has taken the lead at Starbright and is poised to guide us through the promising decades to come. It’s a genuine family business, and I couldn't be prouder of each of the thirty-plus members of the Starbright Family.
“No man is an island. None goes his way alone. What you put into the lives of others comes back into your own.” I’m unsure of the original author or the time it was penned, but this quote has resonated with me throughout all these years. It serves as our guiding principle and reflects our aspirations for the future.
Let us look beyond the present together. To our friends, family, and clients—together, we are united. May we stay true to our core values, always ready to support you.
Thank you all for being a part of this journey. Happy Birthday, Starbright! Here’s to thirty years of youth and vitality!
