Delivering happiness to seriously ill children and their families

About us

Starlight Children's Foundation delivers happiness to seriously ill children and their families. Every 30 seconds, a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. These children are often scared, confused, lonely and facing serious medical treatments. That’s where Starlight comes in. Starlight programs turn a child’s pain, fear and stress into laughter, fun and joy by providing seriously ill children the best in entertainment, education and one-of-a-kind experiences – because sick kids are still kids. We believe all children deserve to enjoy the magic, wonder and happiness of childhood, and we’re committed to providing Starlight programs to every seriously ill child in our network of more than 800 children’s hospitals and community health partners across the US. Since 1983, Starlight has brought smiles to more than 16 million critically, chronically and terminally ill kids and their families.. • Every year, 15,000 children and their families receive a childhood cancer diagnosis. In a matter of seconds, their life is turned upside down as their days ahead are filled with countless tests, chemotherapy, painful procedures, and more. At age two, after a visit to the ER and a seven-hour surgery that ended with complications, Trey was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as ATRT. According to his mom, Ebony, Trey has faced many obstacles during treatment, including countless infections, transfusions, and hearing loss. Still, this cancer warrior continues to have a smile on his face every day. “Trey continues to fight and find the strength through it all," Ebony told us. "He has a very outgoing personality that shines! Not even cancer can take that away from him!” Throughout his journey, Starlight Hospital Gowns encouraged Trey and Ebony’s strength and courage to keep fighting and aided in easing anxiety during his hospitalizations. According to Ebony, the Gowns have supported them both during challenging times and have helped keep a smile on Trey's face. Today, at age four, Trey is undergoing more treatment after finding out his cancer returned. This #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, help us continue delivering moments of comfort and joy to pediatric cancer patients, like Trey, nationwide. Together, we can turn their hospital experience around. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/giqA4rw8 🌟

Thank you to the Chicago Cubs, MLB and Starlight Children's Foundation for making a special visit to our Advocate Children’s Hospital Oak Lawn campus and donating four Nintendo Switches to the Keyser Family Pediatric Cancer Center. These will be available for kids getting treatment to play with and keep their minds busy and have fun at a time when that is difficult. And on top of that, Cubs pitchers Ethan Roberts and Hayden Wesneski and Clark the Cub visited with each patient and made special memories that will last a lifetime! 💙

  • At age two, Georgia was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer. Today, at age four, she is 21-months post treatment but still visits the hospital regularly for bloodwork and scans. For Georgia and her mom, Gina, her hospitalizations come with a lot of anxiety and worry. Knowing Starlight programs are available for Georgia has helped ease some of that anxiety for Gina, trusting that she'll find a little comfort during those tough days of testing. "The items we have received have elucidated some of the sadness," Gina told us. "[They] help her get through the days of tests." • Every year, 15,000 children and their families receive a childhood cancer diagnosis. In a matter of seconds, their life is turned upside down as their days ahead are filled with countless tests, chemotherapy, painful procedures, and more. During her chemotherapy treatments at Seattle Children's, Aria found joy through Starlight Gaming, powered by Nintendo. This program helped brighten her hospital stay by reducing stress, boosting her confidence, and giving her a sense of control over her experience. For Aria, gaming provided comfort and connection, allowing her to socialize, build trust with her care team, and find moments of happiness. The positive distraction not only lifted her spirits but also offered a creative outlet during her journey. In a matter of seconds, their life is turned upside down as their days ahead are filled with countless tests, chemotherapy, painful procedures, and more. For Frankie, who underwent treatment for leukemia, having Starlight programs meant having access to tools and resources to cope with stress and anxiety, especially when he was feeling feeling isolated and scared. Even though his treatment impacted his ability to participate in certain activities, Starlight programs kept him motivated and having fun. “[Starlight VR] helped him when he was on immunotherapy, hooked up to a bag and couldn’t go swimming. It helped him think he is in another world while playing it.” ~ Lisa, Frankie's mom This #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, help us ensure every pediatric cancer patient can experience happiness and positive distraction in one of the most trying moments of their lives. • For pediatric patients, a cancer diagnosis can turn their life upside down. Starlight programs aim to provide hospitalized kids with opportunities to socialize, manage pain, and find comfort. They can contribute to effective coping strategies that help kids manage their pain and find comfort with their familiar and engaging games. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g-t6-DRV In May of 2018, Kyrell was diagnosed with leukemia. His treatment caused him to spend lots of time in the hospital and, at first, it was not a fun place for him. It was the hospital, not home. Thankfully, the Child Life team introduced him to Starlight Gaming. "The Starlight Gaming Station not only gave Kyrell an opportunity to do something he enjoyed doing, but also a chance to play games with his brothers like they were able to before Kyrell got sick," his mom, Lovely, told us. "Between the Gaming Stations and the comfortable Starlight Gowns, Starlight brought my son happiness by providing him comfort and a sense of ease through an extremely difficult experience for all of us." Today, Kyrell is a cancer-free junior in high school, has started his first job, and has ventured into various sports. He's gotten his driver's license and is beginning to tour colleges with the hopes of studying computer technology. Help us turn pediatric cancer patients' hospital experience around with Starlight programs. 🌟
