If you have spent any part of your life picking metal chips from the soles of your boots, or washing that cutting oil smell off your hands with pumas soap, The L.S. Starrett Company is synonymous with quality and precision. Since 1880, the L.S. Starrett company has been the go-to brand for precision machining and measurement. But how many of you know that Laroy S. Starrett was born in China in 1836. Yup, 100% fact, the beginnings of that American institution had it’s beginnings in China. Okay, okay, before you freak out and start burning up the web, Laroy was born in China, Maine, a small town in Kennebec County, Maine (Kennebec County is also home to the Maine Cabin Masters).
Laroy’s story is a great one, growing up as one of 12 kids on a small farm, to a company of over 2,000 employees that is regarded as the standard for quality and precision. He had what he referred to as “invention on the brain” which I think many of us can relate to. From his invention of the Hasher to working with clumsy fixed squares as a pattern maker, his invention of the combination square in 1879 was the seed that grew into what the company is today.
A very good read for anyone mechanically inclined or anyone wanting to know where that prized possession in their toolbox, housed in that famous red box, originated from.
