  • We have an incredible roster of talent on the March programme moving from idea to startup day by day ⏲️ + 🗣️ + 💻 = 🚀 Could you be next? The deadline for our April programme is this Friday 28th March 🗓️ Our application form is here https://lnkd.in/eJcUtztT (image generated by Grok based on the text of the post coupled with "in abstract style". We like the idea of talking and smiling yourself to Product Market Fit but honestly business suits are not required of applicants).

  • This from Sophie Pender really hits. “You’re posh”, says Jamie. She denies that. We never find out if the psychologist is, actually, ‘posh’ – she certainly sounds like she could be. But, if she is, her denial of that fact is an interesting nod to the lack of self awareness sometimes shown by those who do have objective socioeconomic privilege." https://lnkd.in/e49c-RW9

  • Great advice. Far too many startups resort to "more of Plan A" when Plan A is not yielding results.

If you want to generate more demand at your startup, read this post: I was recently talking with a startup founder who was struggling to come up with creative ideas on how to generate demand. Despite having 20 paying customers, their demand gen strategies were falling flat. The founder mentioned their buyer persona is somewhat unique and isn’t receptive to anything they’ve tried. The solution is simple and works 100% of the time. My advice to the founder was to email all 20 customers who purchased their product and ask them: what is the most effective / creative way any sales rep has ever gotten a meeting with you? The vast majority of people I ask this question to, myself included, have an immediate answer. A fun story to tell. Out of a sample size of 20, you’ll come away with several ideas on how to generate meetings that are effective with your specific buyer persona. Pick the best 3-5 and start doing them.

  • Some great advice here on raising your first round of capital from friend of State School Ventures Matt Williamson

Been getting asked how to raise a F&F round after last week’s post. In this one, have tired to break down angel sourcing, making 'the ask', structuring the round and chats through the dos and don'ts. It assumes you’re starting from zero—no network, no idea how to approach angels, and no clue about ASAs, SAFEs or S/EIS. (There’s heaps of better content on SeedLegals or Carta sites—just FYI). An attempt to keep things simple but practical. If your startup’s already in motion, this probably isn’t for you.

  • 🚨 State School Shoutout for computational chemists: 📣 PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE We have a founder on State School Ventures working on materials and drug discovery pipelines looking to speak with research scientists or engineers that use computational chemistry within the materials discovery sector. The ideal contacts would have a high-level overview of their company, with an understanding of their computational chemistry needs. The founder is working on ways to improve computational efficiency to deliver cost effective solutions for the purposes of materials discovery. This is callout is to speak with practitioners in the field interested in participating in product development research. DM on LinkedIn or email reception@stateschoolventures.com if you'd be up for a half hour conversation. (apologies for the AI generated image for "computational chemists meeting").

  • We're delighted to see the Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle championing State School Ventures class of November 2024 graduates Caddy on Sky News today. Stuart Pearson and Kurtis Massey have set a tremendous example embracing innovation to improve public services. They deserve this recognition for their contribution to the communities of Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford, and hopefully now, beyond. It's time to build Britain 🇬🇧

🚀 AI & The Great Divide: Why Social Mobility is the Key to Prosperity AI is set to widen the gap between the haves and the have-nots like never before. I don’t want to be on the losing side of that divide but I don’t much want to live in a world where opportunity is locked away for the privileged few. Social mobility is one of the greatest features of the human condition. It’s what drives innovation, economic growth, and a sense of fairness in society. And no country has embodied this principle more than America over the past 250 years—it’s the foundation of the American Dream 🇺🇸 At State School Ventures, we believe that opportunity should be based on talent, not background. That’s why we’re working to level the playing field in the UK tech sector. 🇬🇧 📢 What do you think? Should the UK be prioritising social mobility in the age of AI? Is venture inherently elitist? #SocialMobility #AI #Opportunity #EconomicGrowth #AmericanDream

  • 💭 "Ambition levels at state schools are set infuriatingly low." This powerful quote from Suranga Chandratillake of Balderton Capital stood out at yesterday’s incredible event on Social Mobility in VC. He spoke about the urgent need to challenge the cultural norms that limit the aspirations of children from lower-income backgrounds—pushing for greater ambition and opportunity. A huge shoutout to David Houghton at Social Mobility Ventures, who has been championing this cause for years. The fact that the event was 5x oversubscribed speaks volumes about the impact he’s making. And thanks to Katie Fulford-Smith for getting me in! I've said it before—only 1 in 4 VC partners come from the 9 in 10 of us who were state-educated. But being in a room full of people committed to changing that was truly inspiring. Key takeaways from Suranga’s talk: 1️⃣ Own your background – It won’t hold you back. 2️⃣ Role models matter – Be the one you wish you’d had. 3️⃣ Confidence isn’t exclusive to private schools – It’s programmed, and we must instil it in all children. Completely inspiring—can’t wait for the next one! #VentureCapital #SocialMobility #StateSchoolProud
