Animation… Beats… Lights!! We cover it all with our Girls Rise Up students so they learn a variety of STEM skills. In honor of Girls Rise Up being in full swing, here’s a look at the modules we often focus on during this 3-week summer intensive program: *𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 – Creating visually interesting and interactive animations through code. *𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗕𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲 – Creating songs by using code to create and mix beats. *𝗡𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵, 𝗡𝗼 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 – Learning the science behind the respiratory system and connecting this to social justice movements. *𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 – Students learn how to use the circuit board microcontroller and code to create interactive wearables. What's so amazing about Girls Rise Up is that absolutely no experience is necessary, yet we watch students leave with STEM + dance skills they never dreamed imaginable. FREEDOM. Our young girls got a chance to express what this powerful word means to them during a monumental event last year... performing on stage for the one and only @Hon. Hakeem Jeffries at his Community Inauguration in Brooklynl! This was an absolute thrill, but what made it even more fulfilling for our team was seeing the confidence in these girls. Despite the extremely high-profile audience, they went out there and crushed it. This event was all about changemakers and their amazing impact on causes close to their hearts. It was fitting that our girls performed at this event, as future changemakers themselves. Today we celebrate Juneteenth… a day of commemoration. A moment to pause and reflect on our past while looking ahead to a brighter future. This day represents a new start. When we consider our mission at STEM From Dance and our desire to forge a better tomorrow for Black and Brown girls. A new start for our students means a new way of thinking. One that changes their perception of science, math and engineering, and their capabilities in these subject matters. One that gives them confidence in themselves and opens their minds to career paths they never thought possible. One that means embracing a community of like-minded girls who will motivate and support them. Our girls recognize that diversifying and introducing new cultures to STEM means more perspective and a more innovative world for their generation and those that follow. In this performance, students coded animations to depict the value of different backgrounds and perspectives in the STEM world. Good news/bad news from a recent Gallup/Walton Family Foundation study. 𝟳𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟵% 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This incredibly insightful study revealed that we’ll experience a surge in STEM-related jobs over the next several years…1.4 million jobs by 2030! 𝘉𝘶𝘵, despite interest, the percentage of Gen Zers who intend to actually pursue a STEM career is small. We know one thing for sure — this report backs up what we’re shouting from the rooftops at STEM From Dance. Young kids, especially Black girls, need more engaging STEM exposure. That’s where we step in, providing more engaging exposure to STEM in a way that resonates with young girls (through dance!), so they gain the confidence to understand it, get excited by it, and fuel their drive to pursue it in the future. We are just one small part of the solution.
