Coaches distressed parents of intense children, struggling with reactivity & disconnected relationships in their family

We are living in unprecedented times, and yet, we still have to parent our children amidst the constant stresses of life moving forward. I imagine, if you’re like most parents of children who are “more”, you had pictured yourself and family life as having a baseline of fun with your kids, in tune with their needs, and living in a peaceful home that is a safe haven for all of you. Perhaps reality has felt more like a shipwreck, with in-fighting, desertions, and little time for fun, let alone for you’re being the “fun parent” you and your kids get to enjoy. If you want to tap back into that peace and fun in 2024, join me for my free workshop, Feb 5th ,7th, and 8th. https://lnkd.in/gpJAkKEZ

Join us LIVE as we discuss Microtraumas and Children’s Mental Health. Sign up at janwinhall. com and click on Embodied Dialogue Series - link in comments. After 27 years of working with children and families my own practice and teaching deepeened and grew when I looked at it through the lens of Polyvagal Theory, created by Dr Steve Porges. I am really looking forward to my chat with the one and only Jan Winhall 💃🏻 she has invited me discuss pediatric mental, emotional and physical health of children and how this is impacting the dynamics of The Family Nervous System™️ ❣️If you haven’t met Jan yet, she is an incredible facilitator for presence, connection with self and others through her Felt Sense Polyvagal Model. I define Microtraumas as the internal signals (hormones of stress, inflammation in the body and brain, vagus nerve dysregulation) reacting to Internal and external input that are creating cues on NON-safety. I look at inflammation and hormone markers, immune system health, neurological antibodies and more and can SEE how these microtraumas add up. We can use what I call the 5% rule to reduce these impacts and allow the children’s innate resilience to get momentum for restoring healing and balance. ❤️ Link to sign up in comments. #polyvagal #childrenshealth #mentalhealth #pediatricmedicine #savechildhood #brainhealth #mentalhealth #braingutmovement

  • Love Scott's take on this. I love sharing body-doubling with parents - we as adults need body-doubling, too. Many adults are neurodivergent and don't know it because they've adapted unconsciously so well by learning how to mask and code-switch. We adult parents get to live with more ease and flow. Creating our own team of body-double people and times to be with them helps parents be the grounded nonchalant body doubles their kiddos need.

When I built our executive function coaching program, I knew that we needed body doubling to be part of the growth process for the college students that we work with, particularly those with ADHD. Over the past decade, I've seen students use this technique to not only grow their initiation and attention skills, but also become more productive, reduce their stress, and get better grades. It's always good to read articles like this that can bring more attention to this strategy and hopefully help students and professionals out there.

💃🏼 Day with teens 👍🏼 Always learning 💬 About communicating I spent a great day in Central London with my teens yesterday. We enjoyed the Chinese New Year celebrations and went to a gallery. We were together all day, and we celebrated a loved one's birthday by finding things he would have liked. The teens were just lovely. I am in a parent support group about teens now and that is helping. Here are some quick tips for communicating that I found helpful. If you are... ⏭ Asking too many questions...listen with empathy ⏭ Being bossy or always giving orders...try 'I' messages ⏭ Lecturing...say it once and then stop ⏭ Criticising and blaming...find the good ⏭ Jumping to conclusions...listen first ⏭ Threatening and shouting...offer a choice ⏭ Acting as if you always know best...bite your tongue! Let me know any teen tips you might have, I'm always learning. Have a great weekend!

  • I love this soooo much!! Do you know that the body and brain work to MIMIC the facial expressions, body image, heart rate (and more) of the people they are with? So...... sub-consciously, our children are 'living' what we are living - Scary AND a Powerful Opportunity!! Model Model Model!! One thing I want to expand on in the chart below (which likely was intended to be a part of the concise words that are there) Next to the triangle "F E E L and work through E M O T I O N S, obstacles, and problems with our B O D Y and words, with a person who is grounded and loving holding space for us while we are doing our 'feeling' and 'work'. "

  • As someone who was pregnant with our second child WHILE sleeping in a hospital room with our 2.5 year old first born, due to that child's incessant coughing, dx'ed as asthma during this hospital stay - this summary by Liam N. Power and the article hit home. PARENTS, CHILDCARE-PROVIDERS, TEACHERS - please be aware, if possible, of the birth mother's pregnancy context for each of the children in your care. It could help you respond to those children with more compassion more consistently even when your patience is running low. Thank you for your summary and sharing, Liam!

🧠 New Insights: The Impact of Early Adversity on Brain Development Recent research from A*Star in Singapore reveals a startling phenomenon: children facing adversity in the womb, like maternal health issues, show accelerated brain development. This rapid growth, a possible survival response, unfortunately shortens the period of neuroplasticity, increasing risks of cognitive and mental health issues. The study involved children from the Gusto cohort, observed from birth through MRI scans. Results indicated a significant decline in neuroplasticity between ages 4½ and six for those exposed to early adversity. Dr. Tan Ai Peng, leading the study, highlights a silver lining: early intervention can reverse these effects. This underscores the importance of timely mental health support for children. Let's focus on nurturing our children's minds from the start, recognizing the crucial role of early experiences in shaping their future.
