Planning for the phase 2 retrofit works at our project for Kingston university are firmly under way with our phase 2 site kick off meeting. With a scope of works to retrofit 6 floors of fan coil unit systems and the upgrade of LTHW Pipework accross all floors. This summers phase will be challenging to ensure heat on for the new academic term, with a limited programme duration for summer shut down. Another day .. this time a “gas guzzling shed” a difficult discussion to have with clients and customers surrounds the unit cost for gas (average 5p per kWh) where electric is in excess of 20p per kWh. The requirement to “de-gas” presents a potential financial implication in large spaces requiring a consistent ambient temperature set point when considering electrification of the existing fossil fuel heat source. How do we combat this ? We have to approach these projects in a different manner with emphasis on heat recovery systems and BMS to make better use of heat rejection within occupied spaces. Re-thinking existing design criteria and strategy, reducing the need for a heat source. Another day .. another “mega shed” Stonegrove R&I were commissioned by our valued client to complete a de-carbonisation assessment for a logistics unit based in Yorkshire. With a tenant consuming large amounts of electricity per year and low occupancy levels due to the deployment of autonomous packing equipment. Thinking outside the box on this one was key. Working in partnership with WP3 Ltd a baseline dynamic thermal model was established with metering data correlated to simulate conditions for intervention.
