We have the location for the first CHIPS for America research and development flagship facility! The U.S. Department of Commerce and Natcast.org, the operator of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), have settled on the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Accelerator in NY CREATES’ NanoTech Complex in Albany, New York. SMI, under the leadership of Rebecca Gansca, Ken Wetzel, and Aarzu Maknojia, is proud to support the $825 million federal investment to advance state-of-the-art EUV technology, which is essential for manufacturing smaller, faster, and more efficient microchips. “With this first proposed flagship facility, CHIPS for America is providing access to cutting-edge research and tools to the NSTC and its launch represents a key milestone in ensuring the United States remains a global leader in innovation and semiconductor research and development,” said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. “The research and development component of the CHIPS and Science Act is fundamental to our long-term national security and ensuring the U.S. remains the most technologically competitive place on earth." Great event and great opportunity for me to be a part of discussions on priorities for this community and potential alignments with DoD.

Last week, we had an incredible turnout for our United States Advanced Ceramics Association (USACA) 2024 Fall Technical Meeting. I want to thank everyone who attended and helped make the event a success.   Our Fall Technical Meeting included insightful discussions on the progress of our working groups and outlined plans for an upcoming visit to Capitol Hill in the spring. Additionally, we addressed agency priorities related to advanced ceramics, the President's and Congress's budget proposals, and relevant funding programs.   We had the opportunity to hear from several outstanding speakers during the meeting. I would like to extend my gratitude to our lunch speakers, Dr. Ivar Reimanis from the Colorado School of Mines and Ms. Adelaide Jean-Jacques, PMP from Lucideon, as well as our distinguished guest speakers: Dr. Aisha Haynes, PhD, Dr. Craig Przybyla, and Dr. Korine Duval, Ph.D.   Remember to keep an eye out for our monthly newsletter, which includes details about upcoming events. SMI VP John Major was proud to be on hand to support the launch this month of a new home for the Macomb Automation and Robotics Zone (MARZ), a public-private partnership for students to explore robotics. MARZ put down stakes at the Advanced Manufacturing Commercialization Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan, which is operated SAE Government Technologies. “SAE is excited about the impact this space will have on participating students," said Mark Pickett, technology transfer program manager at SAE GT. "For more than 30 years, SAE’s ‘A World In Motion’ STEM programs have been providing hands-on STEM experiences in classrooms around the globe." MARZ was created by Macomb County Government, Macomb Community College, the Macomb Intermediate School Dist and the City of Sterling Heights to enhance opportunities for K-12 students to discover careers in advanced manufacturing and robotics.
