This spring I set a goal to run the NYC Marathon. I’ve never been an athlete, and between my family and my job, finding time to train to run 26.2 miles seemed impossible. Why do such a hard thing? Because our scholars and families are running a marathon of their own — an educational marathon. In solidarity, I am training and running a similarly hard race. At Success, our goal is 100% of scholars prepared to go off to four-year colleges, earning robust financial aid. That takes grit and resilience. It takes all of us — educators and parents, kids and teachers — locking arms, committing to our goal, and working together as a team. Training for the marathon is similar. Obviously, I'm capable of running. But when I’m out there, it can seem impossible. Every day between now and then is my chance to ensure I am ready — and to inspire our community to stay the course and outrun limits, to reach the finish line of our educational marathon.

Outreach Intern @ NYUAD, Environmental Studies Scholar @ NYU. Aiming a bachelor's in Environmental science with a minor in Chemistry. Future Doctor. Former Air Force ROTC. Photographer and journalist.

This is my first job #appreciation post !!!!. This summer, I had the wonderful experience of interning with the Success Academy Network in the family care and engagement department. As a former SA student, I had never really thought about trying to explore Success Academy from an inner perspective, all of my scholarly alumni thoughts and questions, such as “Why don’t we have field trips”, "why do we have so so much homework and exams to complete?” now have been answered. My #SA internship was not just an internship, as cliche as that might be now. Thanks to many of the employees, I had the opportunity to see the company from a school and corporate perspective. At the family engagement team, I had the opportunity to visit numerous SA schools, not only logistically but physically as well. I toured a number of SA schools, helped out at my former high school, spoke to new and old students, gave them advice, and tried to induce change in the community.I acquired new skills different from a lot of spaces that I have been in. Communication is a skill that I understood was always important to have as an adult and as a human being. Being good at communicating was not easy for me to be. Especially with parents. The SA community prides itself on establishing a good relationship with families and scholars as well. Speaking to parents has been difficult in some instances, but with the help of my supervisors, Joey Powell and Lauren Struss, many of my other team members, such as Keijhon Francis & Foluke Gabrielle Denis, and staff at perspective schools, I was able to learn that I needed to meet people in the middle when it came to communication.I am also thankful to all of the SA families and SA employees at SA schools for making SA the huge and tight night organization that it is. The foundational message that education should be granted to all children no matter their background has been lovely to see physically. As a fourth-year student studying at NYU, It really has become a full circle moment, from being a quiet immigrant black girl coming to Harlem to being a student at SA, studying abroad at in Abu Dhabi at #NYUAD, working at SA, and now planning on graduating from New York University with my bachelor’s.Now, my journey is not over yet; after receiving my bachelor’s in Environmental Studies, I plan on receiving my post-back and heading to medical school.Thank you to my family and close friends and the SA community for the lovely summer!* #SuccessAcademy #Internship #intern #learning #communications #coorporate

Last week, our Success Academy Midtown West 5th-grade scholar Leo P. showcased his exceptional chess skills by playing a simultaneous match against 16 J.P. Morgan employees as part of their Employee Appreciation Week. In a simul, one player competes against multiple opponents simultaneously, walking around and making one move at a time. Leo’s impressive performance is a testament to the advanced strategic and critical thinking abilities he has developed through the SA chess program, winning all 16 games.

  • When asked what their favorite time of day is, many scholars often say recess!   Dedicated time to play is essential to the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children. Through play, scholars are also able to enjoy the outdoors, build friendships, and use their imaginations – that’s why we have built-in mandatory recess blocks in our daily school schedules and always will.

I am thrilled to share the incredible experience I had during my 13-week internship as a Data Engineer at Success Academy Charter Schools! This opportunity allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting and gain invaluable insights into the field of data engineering. It's hard to believe that just 13 weeks ago, I couldn't tell you what SQL was, let alone a data warehouse or an ETL tool. Collaborating with a team of talented engineers, I learned the importance of adaptability, effective communication, and continuous learning. This experience, in addition to being a highlight of my summer, has solidified my aspiration to pursue a career in software engineering and has prepared me to face the dynamic challenges of the tech industry. Huge thanks to Ali Jarvandi, PhD, Saroj Adhikari, Michael Anatole, Kenny Mai, Carlos Alvarez, Farah Wilson, Isaac C., and so many others, whom I would gladly list one by one but would not be able to fit in this post, for making this an amazing learning experience for me. I am grateful to my mentors and colleagues at Success Academy for their guidance and support. This journey has been instrumental in shaping my professional growth, and I am excited about the path ahead! SIDE NOTE: A new floor was added to the network office this summer and it features a Carnegie Mellon University conference room! The room's number is also the same as my birthday(4.28), which i'm now convinced cannot be a coincidence... is someone pranking me right now? #internship #dataengineering #softwareengineering #datatechnology #learning #careerdevelopment
