Sweeten the current

About us

Simply put: we focus on providing solutions that transition your home, business, or other building away from fossil fuels and give you more comfort, control, and savings. We’re all about beautifully designed, people-first solutions to our current energy challenges. Right now, those solutions are solar electric systems (rooftop or ground mounted), battery backup, maintenance on those systems, and EV charger installations that don’t require trenching for Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina homes and businesses. We’re always keeping up with innovation in the industry, and will certainly add new products when we feel they are ready to help people. If you're ready to join to solar movement, or you just have a question- email or call us today! www.sugarhollowsolar.com Our co-founders, Phelps Clarke (2010 - 2022) and Doug Ager were born loving this land. Two cousins with four generations of Blue Ridge Mountain land-tending running through their veins. As kids, they explored the forests and farmland surrounding Sugar Hollow Road and had the values of land stewardship and being servant leaders instilled in them. (Speaking of servant leaders, maybe you’re familiar with James Clarke or John Ager? They are Doug & Phelps’ elders who have served in the US Congress and NC State House, respectively.) These two are deeply rooted in doing good in and for this region. Fast forward a few years and Phelps and Doug started Sugar Hollow Solar with a simple goal: create a great business that helps heal the world. They had become aware of the existential threat of climate change and wanted to build a business that could create meaningful jobs in their home community and tackle climate change at the same time. Since the company’s first solar installation in 2010, every year has solidified their vision: it’s possible to do right by our community and our planet while building a successful business that can exist for the long haul.

One week after Hurricane Helene, we are reflecting on the impact it had on our community and our company. First, we want to share that our staff members and families are safe thankfully. Unfortunately, our warehouse in Biltmore Village was completely flooded so we lost our inventory and home base. We’re in the process of moving into a new warehouse that was luckily unaffected by the storm, and we’re working hard with the help of great partners to restock and get back to installing these much-needed clean energy systems. In the meantime, we’re prioritizing urgent service needs, remove-and-replace projects, and emergency situations. We appreciate your patience as we navigate this challenging time. We’re so thankful for the incredible support from our partners and community and for the shared commitment to building a more sustainable future. Together, we will recover and rebuild. 🌞

On this Sunday, we’re celebrating Mack joining our crew 2 years ago! An avid trail runner and adventure seeker, Mack began as a Solar Craftsperson and is now one of our Install Crew Leaders. Mack moved to Asheville a few years ago and soon after started a career in wilderness therapy. He previously managed a recreation area in Pisgah Forest and became fascinated with a small solar array that powered part of the recreation center, which led him to a career in solar! Outside of work, Mack enjoys trail running, spending time with his dog, making homemade sourdough, tea, books, any instrument with strings, and kayaking.
