More than 100,000 people are waiting on a lifesaving organ transplant. And 57% of those on are from minority communities. August is #MinorityDonorAwarenessMonth! An organ transplant has a higher survival rate if the donor and recipient share a genetic background. This month highlights the need for more organ, eye, and tissue donors among African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander American communities. Superior HealthPlan is a statewide leader in healthcare, now serving 2 million members across Texas.
About us
Since 1999, Austin-based Superior HealthPlan has provided quality, affordable health coverage to communities across Texas. As part of the Centene Corporation family, Superior now employs more than 3,000 people across the state and offers nine products to 2 million members. No matter how much we grow, our purpose remains the same: transforming the health of Texas communities, one person at a time. We achieve this through a commitment to three brand pillars: Whole Health - Our programs focus on mental and physical wellness to provide our members access to the personalized help they need. It’s why Superior has been among the top-rated Medicaid health plans in Texas for 6 straight years, earning a score of 3.5 or higher on a 5.0 scale on the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Medicaid Health Insurance Plan Ratings. This includes a score of 3.5 for 2022. Focus on the Individual - We provide the tools and information our members need to build healthy habits that last a lifetime. See exactly how this approach makes a difference at www.SuperiorHealthPlan.com/membersfirst. Active Local Involvement - Superior is proud to support grassroots organizations in our own backyard through fundraising and volunteering. For example, our dedicated community team organized or attended more than 1,100 events in 2022 to support low-income families and neighborhoods. It’s how we help our neighbors build a stronger, healthier future. In partnership with Texas Health and Human Services (HHS), Superior provides health care to individuals who are underserved in all 254 Texas counties. This includes becoming the first managed organization in the country to offer coverage to children in foster care through STAR Health, a program managed by Superior since 2008. Additionally, Superior offers STAR, CHIP, CHIP Perinate, STAR+PLUS and STAR Kids. The company also delivers health care through Medicare, STAR+PLUS Medicare-Medicaid Plan (MMP) and the Health Insurance Marketplace.

For 25 years, we’ve been dedicated to continuously supporting Texas communities, which includes fundraising, volunteering, and many other ways to support Texas communities. That was all on display in our annual community investment report. In 2019, Superior adopted a program from Johns Hopkins Medicine called MIND at Home to support members who have dementia. It’s been incredibly impactful for participants, leading to a 16% decrease in visits to the ER. A new article from Health Affairs explores this program in-depth, looking at how it works and why it’s making a difference in people’s lives. https://bit.ly/4diuZAZ

In June, we were proud to welcome Darrell Green to one of our many educational baby showers we host across Texas each month. A Texas native and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Darrell spoke to our members about his own experience as a parent as well as his long-time commitment off the field to supporting youth in Texas and beyond. A special thanks to our Community Outreach and Care Management teams for all the work they do to support our members!

It was a wet and wild day at the water park for our Central Texas members at the July Superior Celebration event! Superior hosts birthday parties on a monthly basis for our eligible members under three years old all across the state. It's just one way we help transform the health of our community, one person at a time. #TransformHealth #ActiveLocalInvolvement

Last week at the Superior Community Hygiene Closet Day at the Monte Alto Recreation Center in Hidalgo County, 105 families received personal care items at no cost to them. Additionally, Superior’s community partners MHP Salud and Region One Education Service Center attended to help provide information about benefits programs, health services and employment opportunities available to Texans. #TransformHealth

Access to specialized play equipment for children with sensory needs can help their development in language and cognitive skills, anxiety management, and motor function. At Sensory Palace in McAllen, Superior sponsors the monthly play date through the Rio Grande Valley Down Syndrome Association to help get children access to the equipment and toys they need to have fun while stimulating their senses. At this month's event earlier this week, we had a blast seeing the kiddos in attendance interact with the play equipment while sharing information with parents about the benefits and services available to support Superior members with specialized needs. #Texas #TransformHealth
