This is brilliant!
Wearable technology requires power to function. Batteries normally provide this power…But what if you could power your garment without a battery? Here’s a clever solution I saw today at #ISPO from Uppik, who use embroidered Triboelectric yarn to generate enough power to run their technology. The Triboyarn is embroidered onto the side of the chest section of a garment, just beneath the armhole. As you run, the inside of your upper arm rubs past that Triboyarn patch on every stride. This stride-for-stride movement generates static, which is harvested by the Triboyarn, and used to power LEDs for night visibility. It’s not exactly a nuclear reactor, but it’s a start, and I appreciate the thought and rationale behind the concept. No battery = no harmful end-of-life byproducts or hazardous waste.
