March Madness is here 🏀, and in my latest for Forbes I discuss how the NCAA continues to correct their inequitable, poor buisness based practices since the 2021 revelations. For the first time, women's teams are receiving monetary "units" for their tournament participation, a change that mirrors the benefits men's teams have enjoyed since 1991. The delayed implementation of payment units is particularly egregious when examining fan growth trends for NCAA women's basketball over the years. Past women's championship games have attracted substantial viewership, with matchups like UConn-Tennessee drawing over 5.5 million viewers going back to the early 2000s. And Women's Final Four events have seen impressive attendance numbers for decades, with the 2002 event in San Antonio setting a record with 29,619 fans attending both the semifinals and championship game. Subsequent years in Atlanta and Knoxville also drew crowds exceeding 20,000. This historical lack of investment by the NCAA has merely created a self-fulfilling prophecy: by underinvesting in women's sports, the NCAA could point to smaller audiences and revenues to justify continued inequitable treatment all while ignoring how their own policies were artificially suppressing that growth.
