Sometimes when dropping off eels to schools, we meet other amazing aquatic friends! These axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) were chilling in Williamsport Area School District Jennifer Flint's classroom. Unfortunately these cute salamanders are listed as critically endangered. SRBC's EIC Program: https://lnkd.in/eEUEMYxi Johanna H. Aaron Henning

A water resource agency serving the Susquehanna River Watershed
About us
The Susquehanna River Basin Commission is an agency with a mission - management of the water resources of the basin under comprehensive watershed management and planning principles. As a federal-interstate compact commission, its focus is defined by the natural boundaries of the river basin rather than the political boundaries of the member states. As such, the SRBC serves as a forum to provide coordinated management, promote communication among the members, and resolve water resource issues and controversies within the basin.

"The Creek Where We Fed on Eels" - now this is a cool way to tell a compelling story! Meet Jules Stanley, a master's candidate in the Johns Hopkins Science Writing Program. Growing up in Hershey, she spent years along the waterways of the Susquehanna River Basin, including a recent kayak trek down the Swatara Creek. Her writing focuses on biology and ecology, and how they tie into local histories. After her "Swatty" trip and an interview with our manager of Monitoring & Protection Jamie Shallenberger, Jules created this scrolling story that focuses on the disappearance of a defining fish. Bravo Jules for shedding light on our local waterways and one of our basin's most iconic aquatic species! https://lnkd.in/e5jUMWiq

"10th Annual Imagine A Day Without Water" Imagine waking up tomorrow and there’s no water. No morning coffee, no shower, no brushing your teeth. You turn on the tap, and nothing comes out. It’s not just an inconvenience; it’s a crisis. In many parts of the world, this is a daily reality. Over 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Without water, agriculture collapses, food prices soar, and communities suffer. Every drop counts, yet we waste 30-40% of our water supply. Think about that. A day without water forces us to confront our habits. It’s time to act—conserve, educate, advocate. We must protect our most precious resource before it’s too late. Water is life. Let’s not take it for granted.

As of October 10, 2024, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) has several key developments and events on the horizon: 1. Public Hearing on October 30, 2024: SRBC is set to hold a public hearing to review several water withdrawal and consumptive use project applications. The hearing will also address the proposed 2025 regulatory fee schedule. Public testimony on these topics will be accepted, and decisions will be finalized at the SRBC’s business meeting in December 2024. 2. Conowingo Watershed Program: The SRBC continues its efforts under the Conowingo Watershed Implementation Plan. A recent webinar on October 9th focused on the second round of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) aimed at reducing nutrient pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. This initiative is part of the broader "Pay-for-Success" program designed to finance projects that improve water quality, particularly targeting the Conowingo Reservoir's environmental impacts. 3. Stream & Watershed Enhancement Grants: The SRBC has opened a second round of grants on August 7, 2024 and ends October 31st, 2024 to support local organizations working on projects that improve watershed health and resilience. This follows a successful first year of the program. These initiatives highlight SRBC’s ongoing commitment to addressing water quality and resource management challenges, particularly in light of climate change and human impacts on the basin
