Solving the toughest challenges facing California's land, air and water.
About us
Sustainable Conservation helps California thrive by uniting people to solve the toughest challenges facing our land, air and water. Every day, we bring together business, landowners and government to steward the resources that we all depend on in ways that make economic sense. Because we know that common ground is California’s most important resource. Too often, conflict overshadows common ground when solving environmental problems. For decades, fighting it out in court or the state house has been the default approach to addressing tough challenges facing California’s land, air, and water. Each conflict deepens the distrust and animosity between environmental groups and business, while the pressure on our vital natural resources only increases. California deserves better. When we unite all those who are affected by a problem, understand their perspectives, and find common ground, we succeed in stewarding the resources we all depend on for a thriving future.

Jack Lee writes in the SF Chronicle that this month's extraordinarily high evaporative demand in the Central Valley is hastening drought conditions and exacerbating wildfire risk. Our water future depends on how we steward our water resources during dry periods such as this summer

Earlier this month, Sustainable Conservation CEO Ashley Boren wrote a guest opinion article for the Sacramento Bee. Read how 2023 was a banner year for groundwater recharge, but there's still more we can do to scale the practice!

According to Zara Gouden, a study in 2022 found that evaporative water loss from reservoirs has been increasing annually by 5.4% over the past 33 years. Another reminder that our 20th-century water storage infrastructure does not reflect our 21st-century water and climate realities

CalTrout has launched a three-year study to understand and protect the spring waters in Northern California’s Cascade Range. Collaborating with various organizations and universities, the study will assess the conditions, flows, and climate change sensitivity of these springs, informing future policy and management to enhance their protection
