We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim.
About us
Pacific Environment empowers communities to protect their well-being and the natural world around them. We get money and expertise to the ground in challenging venues on the Pacific Rim, including China, Russia, and the Alaskan Arctic. By strengthening communities and protecting the environment in such places, we also promote transparency, public participation, and legal enforcement, which form the basis on which people can achieve lasting protection of their health and the environment. Pacific Environment offers one of the very few granting and training programs serving grassroots leaders around the Pacific Rim. At the heart of our long-term commitment to community-led environmental activism is a comprehensive support program. The community leaders and groups we partner with consistently tell us that the value we provide stems from three things: 1) giving them financial and mentoring support; 2) bringing them together in coordinated networks; and 3) supplying much needed expertise for their campaigns (e.g., technical, scientific, legal). Over three decades we have nurtured more than 150 grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim and provided millions of dollars. In turn, the networks we foster create concentric ripples outward to many more people and organizations that ally together to undertake public education, litigation, media outreach, large-scale advocacy campaigns, and sophisticated policy work. To complement these community efforts, Pacific Environment has developed substantial expertise in global policy venues typically beyond the reach of local leaders. For example, we have obtained one of the few seats available to NGOs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. agency that writes the rules for the high seas. We use this seat to advocate for rules that protect marine mammals and indigenous food security, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and protect Arctic waters from the dangers of catastrophic oil spills.

Happy Arctic Sea Ice Day! 🧊🦭 Keep reading to learn more about current threats to the Arctic how to get involved. Right now, one of the biggest threats to the Arctic is black carbon. But what exactly is black carbon? 💨 ➡️ Black carbon is pollution created by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, which leaves dark-colored particulate matter on snow and ice, reducing reflectivity and consequently increasing snow and ice melt. ➡️ Black carbon accelerates Arctic warming, which is happening four times faster than the global average. So, what can we do to change this? One of the most direct ways to combat black carbon and Arctic warming is by advocating for strong policies at the International Maritime Organization the United Nations agency for regulating maritime shipping — where Pacific Environment holds consultative status, so our Arctic team can make comments, provide recommendations and engage the world’s leaders on Arctic issues. How can you get involved? 🫵 📣 ✔️Consider donating to Pacific Environment to help fund our work combating black carbon in the Arctic: https://bit.ly/donatePE ✔️ Read up! Following on the heels of the first all-electric tugboat here in #California, now we see the first all-electric hydrogen ferry. Thanks to California Air Resources Board for the courage & vision to lead the way and all the advocates involved in passing the Harbor Craft Rule. The #technology is here! Thanks to Sea Change and WETA for being first movers. We urge US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to approve the waiver now! ⛴⚡#PollutionFreePorts

July 3rd marks International #PlasticBagFreeDay! 🌎 This year, Pacific Environment Vietnam was involved in the second annual No Plastic Bag Day event dedicated to raising awareness about the environmental impact of plastic bags and promoting sustainable alternatives in Vietnam. The Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) and the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade launched the 2024 No Plastic Bag Day campaign with the message "Less Plastic Bags, More Life." A series of events were launched as part of this campaign at various supermarkets and retailers nationwide from June 29th to July 3rd to raise customer awareness about reducing plastic bag consumption, including mini-games with Q&A sessions related to plastic waste, learning through play, lucky wheel spins, a photo booth, messages to the future and an online competition. 🎲 Each year, #InternationalPlasticBagFreeDay encourages individuals, businesses and governments to reduce plastic bag consumption through simple actions such as: 🛍️ Using reusable bags 📣 Supporting local initiatives 🌱 Advocating for environmentally friendly policies In addition to advocating for systemic change, individuals can also make small changes every day to collectively work towards a cleaner, healthier planet. What reusable solutions do you incorporate into your everyday life? 👇👇 Let us know in the comments below! Big shoutout to the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE), Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, the Alliance of Retailers for Reducing Plastic Bag Consumption for their work reducing plastic pollution! 🎉
