About us

We are a Collaborative Network of professionals and students, teachers and scientists, chefs, artists, gardeners, engineers, musician, and everything in between, but above all else, we are members of the community who care about what is going on. We are constantly working to have a positive impact on the community and environment, and hope our work can facilitate the creation of similar groups all over the world. Our members are mainly from Jersey City, but extends into the surrounding area. The mission and focus of Sustainable Jersey City is to encourage community partnerships and neighborhood actions toward making Jersey City a more sustainable and resilient place to live and work. In that spirit we are committed to developing more effective ways of working with municipal officials at all levels and have undertaken three main activities to work with civic minded stakeholders. These align with the Sustainable Jersey Actions that Jersey City has just been certified for. Community Outreach & Education Sustainability Planning for Neighborhoods Innovative Demonstration Projects The above includes developing a broad platform for community engagement, bringing resources - including participatory planning tools and funding - to stakeholder groups for green neighborhood initiatives and structuring a framework for ongoing civic leadership development and sustainability focused educational opportunities.

Did you know that nearly 98% of the phosphorus we consume in urban areas ends up in sewage sludge? 💡 A new study by IIASA researchers highlights the potential of phosphorus recovery from municipal wastewater as a sustainable solution to secure this essential mineral for future generations. 🌱 Why does it matter? Phosphorus is crucial for food production, but it's a non-renewable resource with uneven global distribution. By recovering it from wastewater, we can reduce our reliance on finite resources, cut down fertilizer costs, and promote a healthier environment. 🇸🇪 Spotlight on Sweden: The study explores how Swedish wastewater treatment plants can adopt phosphorus recovery technologies, turning waste into valuable resources! While smaller plants face challenges, collaboration and innovative sludge management strategies can make recovery economically viable and sustainable. Let's rethink waste management and embrace solutions that support a circular economy. What other ways can we turn waste into resources? Share your thoughts below! 👇 #TrashTalkThursday #CircularEconomy #PhosphorusRecovery #WasteToResource #SustainableFuture #IIASAResearch

The Biden-Harris administration is taking its first steps to potentially regulate vinyl chloride, a versatile yet cancerous and flammable chemical widely used in PVC pipes and packaging. This comes after a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, raised serious health concerns. 🌍🚆 🔍 Why It Matters: Health Risks: Vinyl chloride is a known human carcinogen, highly flammable, and potentially explosive. Safety Concerns: Transporting vinyl chloride across long distances on accident-prone freight trains poses significant risks. 💡 Implications of Tougher Regulations: Health & Safety: Regulations would address health concerns, reduce cancer risks, and prevent accidents. Industry Impact: Stricter rules could disrupt markets for plastics used in medical devices, packaging, household goods, and more. 🏛️ What's Next: The EPA is starting formal studies to evaluate the risks of vinyl chloride and other chemicals. These assessments and potential regulations will take several years to finalize. JD Vance's Response: Pushed for better railroad safety and compensation for affected communities in Ohio. Advocates for residents' concerns about air and water quality. Stay informed and stay safe! 💪 #EnvironmentalSafety #ChemicalRegulation #PublicHealth #VinylChloride #SafetyFirst Read more: https://ow.ly/PB2M50STkGo
