Virtual Executive Assistant | Conservation Storyteller | I support professionals in identifying and deploying their strengths using the Strength-based approach
A long time ago, around the year 1250, the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island created large human-like statues, most of them carved from compressed volcanic ash. These statues, known as moai pronounced as "Moo-eye", were sculpted at a main quarry and then transported to be placed on stone platforms called Ahu. What makes these figures unique is their oversized heads, which make up nearly 40% of their entire body, and the fact that they have no legs. Archaeologists believe that these statues were more than just symbols of authority and power. To the Rapa Nui, they were sacred, representing the living faces of their deified ancestors, filled with spiritual energy. The moai were placed facing inland, overlooking the land of their clans. When Europeans first arrived on Easter Island in 1722, they encountered these imposing figures standing watch. Incredibly, over 900 moai were carved and transported by the Rapa Nui people, an achievement both creatively and physically remarkable. To this day, new statues continue to be discovered, with more found as recently as 2023. Recognizing their importance, the moai were included in the 1972 UN Convention to protect cultural and natural heritage, and in 1995, Easter Island became a UNESCO World Heritage Site to preserve these wonders for future generations. What stories about the moai have you heard? PS: Have you listened to the Dracula story on my podcast channel? You can listen here: https://lnkd.in/dkKeGSYW Also stay tuned to the next story.
