That is where the SWARM Community comes in, to share knowledge from practitioners getting their hands-dirty and learning lessons from being involved in industry.     IDENTITY VERIFICATION: RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN MULTIMODAL BIOMETRICS VERIFYING IDENTITIES: Traditional biometric systems, which are primarily unimodal, rely on a single source of information for authentication. However, these systems often face challenges such as noisy data, intra-class variations, inter-class similarities, and vulnerabilities to spoofing attacks. In this session, we introduce a robust multimodal biometric system that combines 3D face and 3D ear recognition to address these limitations. By leveraging 3D biometrics, which are more resilient to variations in illumination and poses compared to 2D methods, this system offers enhanced accuracy and reliability in human recognition. The combination of face and ear biometrics is especially powerful due to the physiological stability and non-intrusive nature of these traits, making them ideal for secure and reliable biometric authentication. BIOMETRIC RECOGNITION: This session will provide an in-depth exploration of multimodal biometrics, focusing on the advantages and challenges of using multiple biometric traits for authentication. We will compare 2D and 3D biometric systems, discuss the fusion of biometric data, and highlight real-world applications of this advanced technology. ABOUT THAREWAL: Dr. Sumegh Tharewal (PhD,Post-doc,SMIEEE) is an Associate Professor in the School of Advanced Computing at DBS Global University, India. With over 13 years of experience in research and academia, he has made significant contributions to fields such as Blockchain Technology, Biometrics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, and Image Processing. He has published over 40 research papers in prestigious international conferences and journals such as IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier, with 25 Scopus-indexed papers, 422 citations, and an h-index of 11. Sumegh has received several awards, including the Indo Asian Young Scientist Award in Biometrics (2021) and the Research Excellence Award (2019). His research work has led to 15 global patents granted by the Governments of India, Australia, Germany, South Africa, and the UK.     SMOOTH ATTENTION: IMPROVING IMAGE SEMANTIC SEGMENTATION ATTENTION MECHANISMS: Attention mechanisms have become a critical component in deep learning models, particularly in computer vision. These mechanisms allow models to selectively focus on the most relevant spatial regions of an input image, improving performance in tasks like image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation. However, traditional approaches to attention mechanisms often face challenges with spatial incoherence, where sharp transitions in attention maps result in a loss of focus on key regions, leading to poor generalization in complex shapes. This issue is especially problematic in semantic segmentation, where pixel-level accuracy is crucial for understanding spatial relationships within images. SMOOTH ATTENTION: In this session, we will introduce Smooth Attention, a novel attention mechanism designed to tackle the issue of spatial inconsistency in convolutional neural networks. By applying multidimensional spatial smoothing, Smooth Attention minimizes abrupt transitions in attention maps, improving model focus and enhancing generalization on complex visual tasks. We’ll share the results of experiments that demonstrate Smooth Attention’s superior performance compared to traditional methods, offering fresh insights into advancing computer vision tasks. ABOUT BORIS: Boris Kriuk is a globally recognized leader in machine learning, data science, and deep learning.
