This project was located along the mountainside of Kaweah Powerhouse No. 1. Phase I included the demolition and replacement of aging flume. Phase 2 was similar to Phase 1 but included two separate sites approximately two miles apart and comprised 2,726 LF and 519 LF, respectively, with over 23,500 man hours worked in less than a 4-month period. The Phase 2 work also required the installation of a bypass system to allow the owner to meet local water user delivery requirements. Due to the isolated location, the project required over 570 hours of helicopter support to remove materials from the demolition operation and bring in new materials and equipment. Perched on steep terrain, the project also required crews to work from ropes and rappel vertical rock faces to install the new footings and bent sections. Syblon Reid specializes in this type of work and has many years of experience on such projects.

Syblon Reid was awarded a project for a northwest hydropower company in July 2023.  The team executed detailed planning for access, demolition, drilling, grouting, concrete placement, and water management. Access was primarily through the spillway intake structure, with a scaffold stair tower and temporary guardrails ensuring safety. For the inclined tunnel section, a traveling platform supported by hydraulic winches and accessed via a heavy-duty swing stage was employed. Drilling and grouting focused on water intrusion and reinforcing the substrate layer with cementitious and polyurethane grout injection. Demolition included radial saw cutting and selective removal of concrete using a remote-controlled hydraulic demolition machine. The project utilized a self-consolidating concrete mix to ensure smooth application and high-quality coverage. Custom-designed radial wood forms, anchored with coil rod anchors, were used to match the tunnel’s curvature. Concrete was pumped through ports on these forms using a line pump and tremie tubes, ensuring consistent distribution and avoiding segregation. This approach, combined with advanced formwork techniques, led to successful and efficient aerator system placement. Despite facing initial delays and a tight schedule, the project prioritized safety with zero loss-time incidents. The Contractor-designed access platform proved effective, and while drilling revealed substrate issues affecting stability, the team overcame challenges with innovative water control and demolition methods. The use of advanced concrete technology resulted in a high-quality finish and overall project success.

We’re proud to have played a key role in advancing sustainability at the Yolo County Central Landfill, just a few miles from Davis. Our team took on the construction of two critical components: 🔹 Liquid Food Processing Area: We handled everything from site clearing to subgrade prep, installing geotextiles, asphalt, and concrete pavement. We also added cast-in-place trench drains, a concrete pushwall, and a new HDPE manhole sump, while removing an old storm drainage sump. 🔹 Equalization Tank System: This involved installing a steel corrugated tank, a dual-purpose liquid agitation and routing system, and a pH adjustment system. We also set up grinder pumps, HDPE pipes, flowmeters, valves, and all the necessary instrumentation.

The Russian River Treatment Plant Disinfection Upgrade project consisted of construction of an ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection system at an existing wastewater treatment plant located in Guerneville, California. The scope of work encompassed the installation of a low pressure, high output UV disinfection system in a two-channel concrete basin; coagulation and flocculation facilities; a launder cover over an existing secondary clarifier; piping; electrical equipment; and other plant modifications. #syblonreid #contractorservices #engineeringcontractors #generalengineering #constructionindustry #constructioncrew #folsomca

Every year, Syblon Reid responds to several emergencies for our clients.  These involve a variety of circumstances, including landslides, fire damage, and tunnel repairs.  One of these emergency tunnel repairs came from the California Department of Water Resources to rapidly and surgically remove a deteriorating baffle ring within the river outlet tunnel at the Oroville Lake Dam.  The baffle ring was located approximately a ½ mile inside the outlet tunnel underneath Lake Oroville. Syblon Reid worked around the clock from atop a 120-foot x 30-foot floating platform to remove 60 cubic yards of concrete.  The concrete above the waterline was chipped out and dropped directly onto the platform.  Submerged concrete sections had to be chipped out and placed by the divers into buckets lowered beneath the water so the material could be lifted out and placed onto the platform.  The barge would then move the platform out of the tunnel to a location where the concrete could be disposed of.  Additionally, the steel band that encircled the tunnel had to be cut out and removed. Once all concrete and steel were removed, the tunnel liner was repaired.  In addition to removal of the baffle ring, Syblon Reid built and installed a new pressure relief wall to protect the powerhouse from catastrophic failure of the low level outlet valves.
