Thanks to a recent ruling by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, millions of women will have greater clarity. The directive mandates that all mammography reports and result letters sent to patients must inform them if they have dense breasts—a condition linked to higher rates of breast cancer, which affects one in eight women in the U.S. This critical information helps pave the way for personalized imaging strategies tailored to each patient. Nearly half of women aged 40 and older who undergo mammograms have dense breast tissue, with even higher rates seen in younger women and those with a lower body mass index (BMI). Dr. Paola Rossi, clinical program director for lifestyle medicine at Sylvester, took a career aptitude test that suggested medicine would be a good fit, but it also warned she was too empathetic for the job. She immediately knew she had found her calling. We sat down with Dr. Rossi to discuss her research and innovative approach. 💬 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩? The leading causes of mortality in the U.S. are vascular disease and cancer, and the top risk factors are related to lifestyle medicine. Intuitively, we all know that diet and exercise are important, but mixed messages make it difficult to navigate a healthy path. As clinicians and researchers, we have a responsibility to provide programming and clear and accurate messaging. Discover how we lead the way in lifestyle medicine with Dr. Paola Rossi: https://loom.ly/rEuf9Xw. 🙌

In gratitude, we remember Barry Farber, B.B.A. and his lasting legacy with the University of Miami. A proud alumnus and survivor of both lung and prostate cancer, Barry valued Sylvester’s dedication to cutting-edge cancer research. When it came time to plan his estate, he named Sylvester, South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center, as his philanthropic priority. Barry, who passed away in February at age 89, generously bequeathed $5.4 million to support the construction of the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building. This landmark facility, opening in 2025, will be a beacon for cancer research worldwide, offering new hope for those affected by this illness. In honor of Barry's extraordinary gift, a naming opportunity will be given to him in the new 12-story, 244,000-square-foot facility on the UM Medical Campus. We are deeply grateful for Barry Farber’s vision and commitment, which will inspire and benefit generations to come.

For many cancer patients, sexual health may not be top of mind during treatment, but it remains a significant and often unaddressed concern. A new NCI-funded study, with co-investigator Lara Traeger, Ph.D., clinical psychologist at Sylvester, aims to bridge this gap in survivorship care for bone marrow transplant patients facing sexual health challenges. This five-year study, conducted in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center, will test a mobile app specifically designed to support sexual health post-transplant. “One of the biggest factors is how cancer treatment changes a patient’s connection with themselves, especially for patients who had blood cancers and went through a bone marrow transplant,” says Dr. Traeger. A new study led by Sylvester researchers highlights how pairing MRI imaging with radiation can transform real-time, personalized care for glioblastoma patients. This approach, known as MRI-linear accelerator (MRI-linac), enables daily imaging and treatment adjustments to track and respond to tumor changes effectively. 🙌 The study's first author, Kaylie Cullison, PhD, an M.D./Ph.D. student in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program, recently presented this work at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) conference. Learn how this study led by Dr. Cullison and Eric A. Mellon, M.D., Ph.D. will continue to shape future patient care and research: https://loom.ly/MfRlKNk.
