    Presentation at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition Last week Symbiosyst was present at the 41st edition of the EUPVSEC, held in Vienna in September 23rd-27th 2024.    A presentation was brilliantly given by partner Jonathan Leloux and it was centered around the outcomes reported in the deliverable 5.1 “Conceptual Design of the agri-PV demonstrators”. 👉 The presentation was part of the Conference Topic 4 “PV Systems Engineering, Integrated/Applied PV “, Sub-topic 4.5  “Dual Use and other Innovative PV Applications”, the Topic that gained the highest number of contributions.   Jonathan reported on the conceptual design modeling preliminary results related to: -> the open agri-PV demo project  with apple groves in Ora/Auer, Autonomous Province South Tyrol, in Italy -> the open agri-PV demo project with vegetables (tomatoes, melon, lettuce, and fava beans) in Barcelona, Spain -> the open agri-PV demo project with lemon groves in Scalea, Region Calabria, Italy -> the closed agri-PV demo project with tomatoes in Schipluiden, South Holland, in the Netherlands.    The preliminary results opened key insights into the climatic conditions and their impact on crop health within the agrivoltaic (agri-PV) system.     👉 Through advanced modelling and simulation, increases in crop yields and enhanced renewable energy generation were observed. -> preliminary results underscore the effectiveness of combining photovoltaic systems with agricultural practices.     -> the project successfully identified optimal configurations for agrivoltaic systems across different agricultural scenarios, showcasing significant strides in energy efficiency and sustainability. -> These findings provide a scalable model for sustainable energy and farming practices, contributing to the advancement of renewable energy and agricultural technology sectors.      If you want to know more please consult the project deliverable 5.1 here    👉https://lnkd.in/d2sfU7Uv   Partners 💪:      Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research, ETA Florence Renewable Energies, Delft University of Technology, Laimburg Research Centre, imec, ENEA, FOTONIQ, aleo solar GmbH, LuciSun, MEBIOS S.R.L.     On Wednesday September 11th we all gathered in Bruxelles for the Research Project Month 18 review meeting, hosted in the beautiful headquarter of our partner 3E. The meeting was an important moment to report on what we did up to now, and discuss how to further improve and advance in the coming months. Thanks to our reviewer, the Project Officer of CINEA Irene Pinedo Pascua, for the positive feedbacks and compliments. The project demonstrated to have been generating early and relevant impact in the first 18 months. So Agri-PV community stay tuned for updates on the project outcomes! New training webinar and project deliverables are coming in the coming months to unravel the innovation in Agrivoltaics. Well done partners!     🌿🔋 We are excited to share some groundbreaking developments from the SYMBIOSYST Project, co-funded by the EU's Horizon Europe Programme. Our consortium is pioneering the future of #agrivoltaics, harmonizing solar energy production with agricultural practices to create sustainable, nearly zero-energy farming systems. 🙌 In collaboration with partners including LuciSun, EF Solare Italia, Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research, imec, Delft University of Technology, Laimburg Research Centre , Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, KUBO Group, Laborelec, Valmont Solar, aleo solar GmbH, and FOTONIQ, we are designing and implementing four innovative agri-PV demonstrators across Europe: - Bolzano, Italy: Apple orchards with open agri-PV systems. - Scalea, Italy: Citrus fruits in open agri-PV setups. - Barcelona, Spain: Mixed crops (tomatoes, onions, fava beans, lettuce) in open agri-PV fields. - Netherlands: Greenhouse agri-PV for tomatoes. Our advanced #modeling tools, including 3D simulations and ray tracing, allow for the optimization of PV module placement and design for maximum energy efficiency and crop yield. ⚙ By integrating these technologies, we are addressing environmental considerations such as anti-ice measures and rainwater collection, and enhancing the synergy between solar energy capture and agricultural productivity. 💧🌱☀ The preliminary results are promising, showing significant improvements in both crop yields and renewable energy generation. These efforts highlight the potential of agrivoltaics to transform sustainable farming and renewable energy practices. 🎯The first results of this work have been published in a public deliverable available online: https://lnkd.in/dt7hJGY7 📣 We will also present the latest and most updated version of this work during the EU PVSEC in September 2024 in Vienna, in an oral presentation titled: "Shaping Europe's Agrivoltaic Future: Design of Four Innovative Demonstrators through Advanced Modeling in the SYMBIOSYST Project."     💡🌱 Inspiring discussions at the recent SYMBIOSYST Project internal workshop at Eurac Research. We explored the potential of #Agrivoltaics in South Tyrol, envisioning a future where #Agriculture and #RenewableEnergy intertwine for sustainable development. #AgriPV offers a dual solution: enhancing #food security while harnessing solar #energy, especially crucial in regions that solely rely on rooftop installations which have an installation rate not compatible with ambitious targets. 👉 Did you know that deploying elevated AgriPV systems on just around 3% of apple orchards and vineyards land in #SouthTyrol could be enough to hit the 2030 renewable energy targets outlined in the #KlimaPlan? However, this innovative technology prompts questions about its impact on #landscapes, distribution of costs and benefits, and land ownership dynamics. Can we envision a path forward for AgriPV that balances its advantages and disadvantages for South Tyrol? The foresight workshop, attended by Eurac researchers from diverse backgrounds, explored these questions through various lenses—political, socio-economic, technical, and environmental. By envisioning scenarios for 2040, two narratives emerged: 🌿 Community and nature-based AgriPV according to needs: This scenario advocates for smaller, integrated AgriPV systems alongside #biodiversity reserves. It champions multi-functional designs with minimized landscape impact and envisions a social contract for energy sharing among farmers, fostering nature-building communities. ⚖️ Leibniz scenario: Striving for balance, this approach proposes regulated AgriPV deployment aligned with EU directives. It suggests the creation of local #EnergyCommunities to ensure fair benefit distribution and incentivizes small farmers for adoption. It highlights the role of technology design in maximizing productivity while preserving biodiversity.
