🌿✨ The inaugural #EICxSYNBEEDay took place on Tuesday, 9 April, at the EIC headquarters in Brussels! 🧬🌍 This event marked a significant milestone as SYNBEE, a European Innovation Ecosystems project, and the European Innovation Council joined forces to illuminate the path toward a #sustainable, #innovative future in #SyntheticBiology. The day served as a nexus of ideas, bringing together academia, entrepreneurs, policymakers, early-stage investors. Together, we explored the challenges and opportunities within the synthetic biology landscape. Jean-David Malo, Director of European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), set the stage for a series of captivating discussions. Stéphane Lemaire, (Sorbonne University Biofoundry and Biomemory), and Vitor B. Pinheiro (KU Leuven), painted a vivid picture of the diverse applications and breakthrough potential of synthetic biology, spanning from bio-based materials to biodegradable plastics, carbon-neutral fuels, agricultural bioengineering, DNA data storage. Victoria Sassoon (Synonym Bio), provided an enlightening overview of the synthetic biology market landscape. 4 dynamic round tables, guided by the SWOT analysis by Sindhu Naik, PhD (Delft University of Technology), convened experts in startup creation, regulatory aspects, and access to public and private funding. Our esteemed panelists and moderators, a powerhouse of thought leaders including Marcel Wittmund, (iGEM Startups); Sira Mogas Díez (KOA Biotech); Thomas Landrain (JOGL (Just One Giant Lab); Bouke de Jong (Planet B.io); Olivier TOMAT (Genopole); Ana Atanassova (BASF Agricultural Solutions); Hördur V. Haraldsson, (EEA / Swedish Environmental Protection Agency); Nadège Grabowski PhD. (She / Her) (Da Vinci Labs); Patrick P. Rose (SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen); Francesco Matteucci (EIC); Carina Faber (EIC); Andy Kerr (EIT Climate-KIC CEE); Jan Honoré (Zaz Ventures); Kristin Thompson; and Antoine Pechin, (SynBioVen), engaged in robust discussions shaping the future of synthetic biology. 9 startups (Algaevity, inLux Biotech, Celluol, Asteasier, BioHalo, NoPest, Syngens, Electric Skin, Laastix) showcased their innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.
