One of the best predictors of future tech hiring is the number of tech recruiter positions being posted. Companies start hiring internal recruiters when they plan to hire 10+ people a year (sometimes fewer). According to LinkedIn, tech recruiter postings have increased 9%. Seeing fewer RIF posts and an uptick in internal tech recruiter positions is good for everyone. If you still feel like getting a job is extremely difficult, it’s because it still is. But I can unequivocally tell you it’s much better than it was 6, 9, or 12 months ago. When hiring, most start-ups don’t care if software engineering talent comes from their industry. Instead, they care if you’ve been a part of high growth organizations. Make sure you highlight what type of company you worked at…. “Software Engineer, XYZ Corp (Series D)….March 2020 - Present. - Joined XYZ during Series A as employee #50. Current headcount ~ 500.” 99% of start-up engineers won’t have that “started as the founding engineer at [insert well known YC company]” growth story. And that’s okay! talent cookbook's first placement of 2024 started with a spur of the moment chat with a stranger in 2017. I saw this guy at a Starbucks with one too many software engineering stickers on his computer and decided to awkwardly introduce myself. He ended up being really cool, we became friends, and even co-hosted several technical meet-ups from 2017 - 2019. ...Fast forward to 2024... He's now a CTO and finally had a chance to work on our first role together. I might retire now since batting .1000 will definitely get me into the hall of fame.
