🌸 Thursday Tips with Tamron Image Master, David Akoubian Reflection Photography Tip #4: When doing an image to create mood, consider adding a reflection. Reflections can help to create a soothing feel to an image as it helps to relax the viewer as they look through the frame. I use this technique often when I am photographing subjects that are meant to relax the viewer, like these waterlilies at a local garden. Adjusting the height of the camera allows the reflected lilies to help carry the viewer through the frame and relaxes them as they aren’t left searching the composition.

💧 Thursday Tips with Tamron Image Master, David Akoubian Reflection Photography Tip #3: Reflections can be a critical component when doing abstract photography. Creating abstracts by using reflected light and the slowing down of ripples in the water can be a great tool. I use this technique often in spring and fall when I can find leaves that match the colors being reflected in the water. In this example I lowered my angle of view, and slowed my exposure (recommended shutter speed from 1 – 8 seconds), until the reflected color became an abstract element just above my subject allowing the subject to add an anchor to the abstract image. 🍂 Thursday Tips with Tamron Image Master, David Akoubian Reflection Photography Tip #2: Using reflected color to bring emphasis to my subject. I will often use light reflecting on the opposite side of a river to simply create a palette of color in an image and draw attention to the subject. In this example I went to a small lake down the road during fall colors. By offsetting the boat dock, the colors being lit by the late day sun, and reflected simply add to the image as filler and draw the viewers’ attention to the boat dock.

Inside the Frame with Rick Friedman The photograph of the Golden Retrievers in the back of a pickup truck was made with the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 lens, one of my go-to lenses. I use it regularly on editorial assignments or as my main walk-around lens. The wide-angle to short telephoto is perfect. In this case, I was working on a travel story in Vermont. I was taking a break from shooting in Stowe, VT, and sitting across the street when this pickup full of happy dogs parks for a few minutes. I grab my Nikon camera with the Tamron 24-70 lens and run across the street. Even when I am taking a break from a shoot I always have a camera with me.
