TANDO Institute Fellow Dr. Sharif Uddin Ahmed Rana explains the Talent Economy: The Talent Economy, in the context of modern science, engineering, and technology, refers to an economic system where the primary drivers of value creation, innovation, and competitiveness are the skills, expertise, and intellectual capabilities of individuals. Unlike traditional economies that rely heavily on physical resources, the Talent Economy emphasizes: Knowledge and Expertise: Highly specialized scientific, engineering, and technological skills are at the core of productivity. Individuals with expertise in AI, data science, biotechnology, robotics, and other cutting-edge fields play critical roles in shaping industries and driving innovation. Human-Centered Innovation: The development of advanced technologies is fueled by talent capable of solving complex problems, designing novel solutions, and creating transformative products or processes. This economy thrives on continuous learning, upskilling, and fostering interdisciplinary knowledge. AI and Automation Integration: While AI and automation can perform many tasks, the Talent Economy highlights the essential human element in creating, supervising, and enhancing these technologies. Talent here focuses on leveraging AI to increase efficiency, while still requiring human oversight, creativity, and ethical decision-making. Global Connectivity: Modern communication technologies allow talent to collaborate globally, enabling innovation across borders. The Talent Economy values remote work, digital platforms, and networks that support a borderless flow of ideas and expertise. Technological Adaptability: Talent in this economy must constantly adapt to new technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biomedical engineering, to remain relevant and competitive in their fields. In essence, the Talent Economy is an evolving system where human ingenuity, amplified by modern science and technology, becomes the most valuable asset for economic progress and innovation.

TANDO Institute Fellow Mohan Nair remarks on "The sudden explosion of AI experts." Mohan continues, Shocking how many AI thought leaders have emerged in recent years. It’s fascinating if its delusion or fact that those who propose their knowledge are truly equipped to explain the AI future. We hear of them on LinkedIn with labels like Top Voice or Thought Leader. I received a thought leader designation through LinkedIn and it did make me feel better than usual. I felt smarter! Then I lost it probably because the algorithm could not support my limited postings. I felt less smart! Let me suggest, using some humor and irony, to assess whether AI Experts are legitimate: 1. Do the have experience in the field actually designing or building systems? 2. If you asked them what is LISP, do they mistake it for a speech impediment versus the original AI programming language. 3. Do they understand an allegory from an algorithm. And how they relate. 4. Do they have a tool focus versus a strong focus on impacts side effects and risks. 5. Are they hawking or educating. 6. Can they show you a real life application or use case? 7. If you stand close enough to real experience, osmosis can occur. It’s still not experience. So if they were close to an AI endeavor, was it real. AI was shunned in the 80s and 90s. It was the dark ages. The ones who believed were pioneers. They humbly worked on. I honor them. I remember sitting next to such a pioneer as we listened to a Ivy League presenter in a renowned university. I turned and asked his opinion. He said in a soft voice “nothing new here”. The significance of AI will attract snake oil AI proponents. Don’t let your excitement or insecurity think others know more till you know more. Learn forward Innovators !
