Yesterday, Richard W. Stirgus and I had the opportunity to tour the Port of Tacoma with the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. The Port of Tacoma, established in 1918, plays a critical role in the local economy, handling over $66 billion in international trade and supporting more than 42,000 jobs across Pierce County and the Puget Sound region. It was fascinating to learn about its 2,700 acres of property, much of which is devoted to marine terminals, industrial use, and transportation corridors. As a vital gateway for trade, the Port's focus on sustainability and community partnerships really stood out during the visit. One highlight of the tour was learning about the Maritime Skills Center, a partnership with Tacoma Public Schools. This program provides hands-on training for high school students and adults, preparing them for maritime industry careers. Students gain skills in areas such as vessel operations, logistics, and environmental sustainability, all crucial to the Port’s daily operations. It was inspiring to hear how the Port not only drives economic growth but also invests in the future workforce by collaborating with educational institutions to offer practical pathways into the maritime industry. I was thrilled to hear how this initiative will equip students with real-world skills and opens doors to high-demand, well-paying careers.
