About us
Tax Analysts was established to defend the public interest in a policy arena full of private influence. This week’s employee spotlight features Tax Notes Today International Managing Legal Reporter Andrew Velarde: “It's been a great place to work for all these years.” Andrew started his journey with Tax Analysts in 2013 as a legal reporter and was first promoted to senior legal reporter before moving into his current role as managing legal reporter for Tax Notes Today International. “There is room for growth here at the organization, especially as you develop an expertise in your beats. Your reporting becomes relied upon by the tax community at large.” Andrew’s background in tax has helped his career growth at Tax Analysts. He graduated from George Washington University with a master’s in accounting and then joined Deloitte for two years. During that time, he became familiar with Tax Analysts and its publications. “I was looking to do more writing and jumped at the opportunity to apply to the organization when a legal reporter position opened.” As managing legal reporter, Andrew reports on legal developments and any news that comes out of the Treasury Department, the IRS, and tax conferences around the world. “I also craft and pursue FOIA requests and shepherd those requests through all stages, including litigation. I train and manage other legal reporters, including determining news coverage priorities.” Outside work, Andrew’s family is his priority. “My wife and two children (10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter) are the center of my life, both emotionally and logistically (there's a lot of activities to get to). “I also enjoy swimming and getting outdoors as much as possible.” Learn more about Tax Analysts careers at taxnotes.com/careers.

This week’s employee spotlight features Kathleen Murphy, editor in chief of Tax Notes Today Federal: “It turns out tax intersects with just about everything. The variety of news stories is always captivating, involving topics like baseball, cheesesteak shops, cryptocurrency, and artificial intelligence.” As head of Tax Notes Today Federal, Kathleen coordinates the work of reporters and editors who “shed light on tax policy and administration to deliver the most comprehensive, in-depth coverage of tax news developments.” “We have a specialized audience, so every day we try to figure out what information our readers need to do their jobs. Tax can be super complicated, so we also try to make the stories readable and timely.” Before she joined Tax Analysts in March, Kathleen led a team of reporters and editors at CQ Roll Call. “I liked the idea of using my understanding of government and policymaking while building on my experience as a financial journalist.” She has worked at MLex Market Insight, Stateline, and Internet World, and served as the Marco Island bureau chief for the Naples Daily News in Florida. Kathleen served as the inaugural journalist in residence at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. She has a journalism degree from Northwestern University and a master’s from Yale Divinity School. “Tax Analysts encourages committing excellent journalism, and I feel proud that Tax Notes Today Federal upholds the important role of journalists as mentioned in the Constitution. “Our reporters aggressively use the Freedom of Information Act to uncover documents addressing issues of tax policy administration. What newsperson doesn’t love that?” Outside work, Kathleen enjoys solving crossword puzzles and playing tennis. “Look out, because 2025 is going to bring the conversation about tax into your everyday life even more often.” Learn more about Tax Analysts careers at taxnotes.com/careers.
