One day, all children in this nation will have an opportunity to attain an excellent education.

About us

The city of Detroit and its people are resilient. We know our city is far stronger and full of greater character than the national headlines that try to define us through the lens of polarizing politics, financial instability, and decreasing population. Across the city, positive momentum abounds through thoughtful entrepreneurship, creativity, and a belief in the renaissance of our great city. Detroiters know that our children will play a central role in the revitalization of our community. Teach For America Detroit is humbled to be one partner in this ongoing work. Hand-in-hand with the community, we are working to make Detroit a place where our schools are pillars of educational excellence. We envision a city where passionate leaders fight to put students and families first so that we can proudly live up to Detroit's motto: "We hope for better things, it will rise from the ashes.”

  • Exciting Highlights from Elisa Villanueva Beard’s Visit to Detroit! 🚀 This week, we were thrilled to host Elisa Villanueva Beard, CEO of Teach For America, in Detroit. Her visit was full of meaningful engagements and inspiring conversations about the future of education in our city and state. Here are some of the highlights: 🎓 Elisa met with our incredible TeachMichigan educators at the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS). Together, we reflected on the success of the Detroit Summer Learning Institute (DSLI), where our partnership impacted over 150 students through transformative summer learning experiences. In addition, we discussed the launch of a $100K salary incentive for model teachers—a pivotal project led by one of our System Leader Fellows, aimed at supporting and retaining exceptional educators in Detroit. 🤝 At the TFA Detroit office, Elisa spent time with our regional staff, sharing her vision for education and connecting on how we can continue to deepen our impact. 👥 Elisa also joined a dinner with key leaders in business, nonprofit, and education for conversations on scaling educational equity through TeachMichigan’s initiatives. We’re grateful for her leadership and excited about the collaborative efforts to create an even brighter future for Michigan’s educators and students. #TeachForAmerica #TFADetroit #EducationalEquity #TeachMichigan #Leadership

What a privilege to spend a few days with amazing leaders across the country who have long been committed to transforming outcomes for students with passion! While a long time supporter, this was my first national council meeting Teach For America as Teach For America Detroit”s board chair! It was inspiring to be with leaders like Elisa Villanueva Beard who challenged us all to think about this next era and legacy, David Kenny Sue Lehmann and Kaya Henderson who model leading on the national board with heart and commitment to support and challenge all of us to passionately move TFAs bold vision for systemic transformation in their 2030 call to action! As TFA nears its 35 years of change and innovation i found this meeting full of reflection, innovation and learning with clear eyed purpose of who they have been and will be and more importantly become in this next era ahead. Take a minute to see their values (each one of them spoke volumes and are worth seeing as I did this week in action). So much gratitude to Armen Hratchian and the entire visionary TFA Detroit team’s bold TeachMichigan initiative centers the best of who TFA has always been and expand the approach to ensure that the very best educators at every level are supported, connected and even compensated in ways that double on their commitment to stay in the districts that need them most! I was incredibly proud to brag on all of their incredible work and will continue to be part of lifting the voices of rhe educators supported across Michigan. To anyone who cares about transformational change in education knows while we spend a lot of time debating policy and tactics, outcomes and impact— in every sector and system and structure- will always come down to creating a culture, a structure for the very best talent to choose to be and to stay.
