How do you honor #IndigenousPeoplesDay? Education is an essential tool to understand the culture and often-erased history of Indigenous People in America. By educating younger generations, we also help prevents future injustices from happening again. This blog post from DonorsChoose shares how teachers have recognized the holiday in their classrooms across the country: https://lnkd.in/gWufkJ-x

A recent K-12 Dive article finds that the average U.S. student is less than halfway to full academic recovery following the pandemic. English Language Learners, students that face housing insecurity and students with disabilities are especially at risk, and have unique needs that must be addressed in order to get them back on track. Our schools need additional support, customized to their students' needs, to overcome these challenges. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gmFQztPg

Happy #HispanicHeritageMonth! We're continuing our series on Hispanic education leaders, such as Jaime Escalante, who taught AP Calculus at a low-income, mostly Hispanic school in east Los Angeles. When his students faced cheating accusations for passing the AP exam, he encouraged them to retake it to prove the critics wrong. All of them passed a second time. We applaud Mr. Escalante and his students for their brave stance against discrimination, and continue to be inspired by them today. Every student deserves educators who believe in and empower them.

Did you know? 41% of NYC public school students are Hispanic, yet they make up less than 10% of students admitted to the city's specialized high schools. At New York's elite high schools, there are clear ethnic and racial gaps in admissions. We know that every student deserves a quality education and targeted interventions in math and reading can help close these opportunity gaps. New Census data reveals that the poverty rate among children in America has increased and continues to disproportionately affect children of color. This leads to other issues, such as chronic absenteeism and access to food and healthcare, which often fall on already under-resourced schools to resolve. Teachers carry more weight on their shoulders now than ever before, and they need more support to help meet these demands. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gH5Nw665
