How long does it take to transform an idea into a top-selling product? Not as long as you might think—when you've got the right team. When Segway Powersports decided to break into the Powersports category, they partnered with us to design the industry's first fleet of hybrid electric off-road vehicles. Through a series of design sprints spanning just a few months, we worked hand-in-hand with Segway from product definition to final release. The result? Three unique platforms unified by a common design language that was bold, confident, and undeniably distinct. Fast forward to 2024. While the overall powersports market remained flat early on, Segway PowerSports enjoyed a massive 309% year-on-year wholesale increase and an even bigger 343% retail jump in Q1. Proof that when a clear vision drives iterative design, you're not just speeding up the development process—you're outpacing the competition.

We get philosophical about robots. This shows up especially in science fiction films, with benevolent and malevolent examples respectively thrilling and terrifying our imagined lives with robots. Within these musings mostly about us, though, we can lose sight of why we want robots in the first place: We want them to do work. Our cozy rail seating concept, the Flex Voyager, was chosen to be featured in the new issue of Railway Interiors Magazine! Inspired by the comfort and versatility of a couch, this concept features modular seating configurations that cater to various passenger needs: - With the middle bench seat flipped up, two passengers can sit face to face. With the middle seat down, couples or small families are able to lounge together in a more relaxed position—just like at home. - Solo travelers can purchase the entire bench to stretch out for a nap, utilizing the unobtrusive screen in the warm wood-grain console to display a “relax mode” message for crew. - The narrow screen also shares geographic and journey-specific information, and can be synced with the traveler’s AI assistant to provide personalized journey guidance. - Securable stowage beneath the bench provides easy access to luggage and personal items. An additional flip-up cubby in the console can hold smaller items, helping to keep the passenger’s space organized and clutter-free.

A big shout out to my panelists for a great conversation at this week's Ascend Conference in Las Vegas. We tackled the future of human and robot collaboration in space exploration, defining the essential elements in creating a thriving human to robot relationship. It was the perfect blend of internal experience and external perspectives from a very talented panel. Thank you Tim Hulford, Carla Diana, and Kerry Timmons.

We are the masters of our craft—fact. John Walton stands inside the future in Farnborough with a VIP tour of Boeing's 777X mockup. "All in all, the 777X cabin impresses: it is a major upgrade in terms of spaciousness and aesthetic, with new options for airlines and their passengers, both keenly awaiting the actual aircraft." We're happy to hear it's a hit. Congratulations to our long-standing partners and friends at Boeing! And to our incredible prototyping and build team, bravo! We designed our first mockup for Boeing back in 1956, and we've been doing it ever since. Technology like AR and VR superpowers our process today, but there's nothing quite like IRL magic. There’s no room for trial and error in mission-critical environments. Unfortunately, confusing user interfaces have contributed to accidents since the dawn of their existence, ranging from inconveniences to tragedies. For example, Hawaii falsely sent out a “missile attack alert” to all residents in 2018 due to user error on a clunky menu of options—tragic, no, but certainly traumatizing for message recipients. In 2019, the blaze that nearly destroyed Notre Dame in Paris raged for 30 minutes undetected because the fire alert system was unclear in its initial warning. Unfortunately, a poorly-designed user interface can also contribute to loss of life, as occurred in the 2017 crash of the Navy ship USS John McCain, for example. Drawing on a century of designing for complex use-cases such as space stations, rail operations, and the battlefield, Teague has identified several tactics that inform the mission-critical design systems that we work on. This article touches on three competing demands that are typical of mission-critical products and how design can address each of them.
