Next in our Driving Progress series: General Motors' Spring Hill Plant 🚗 Back in the mid-1980s, GM set out to revolutionize small car manufacturing in Spring Hill, TN. By July 1990, the Spring Hill plant began producing Saturn sedans with innovative features like plastic body panels. ⚙️ The Spring Hill plant became a hub of innovation, transforming how labor and management worked together. General Motors engineers also made extensive efforts to ensure that the assembly tooling and processes were user friendly and ergonomically sound. GM Chairman Roger Smith claims Saturn was “the key to GM’s long-term competitiveness.” The lessons learned at Spring Hill continue to influence GM’s journey in the auto industry today. The Spring Hill plant is still one of GM’s largest facilities, and it recently underwent an $800 million overhaul. 📸: Bill Welch / The Tennessean
