Curious about what it takes to secure early-stage funding? One of our members, DC Palter, shares valuable insights on the true differentiators in startup investment, particularly in angel investments. Only 2% of startups make it through TCA Los Angeles's selection process—and it’s not just about presentation skills. The best investments check critical boxes: a solid exit strategy, high revenue potential, a well-rounded founding team, strong customer validation, and an attractive valuation. Read his great in-depth article below!
Experienced business leader and climatetech startup investor. Award-winning author of the Silicon Valley thriller novels, To Kill a Unicorn and Countdown to Decryption.
My angel groups invest in 2% of the companies that pitch us. What separates that 2% from the other 98% we pass on? Given how much time founders spend on pitch decks, you’d be forgiven for thinking it all about the pitch. But here's a shocking statement: the quality of the pitch isn't all that important. So what does matter? The point of the pitch is to sell us an investment. And an attractive pre-seed/seed investment has to including the following: 1. Viable exit strategy 2. Revenue potential of $100M+ 3. Founding team with technical and business experience 4. Customer validation 5. Attractive valuation Instead of wasting time endlessly revising the pitch, focus first on ensuring you’re offering a great investment.
