The 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗢𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is Earth's most important weather phenomenon. It is commonly known as El Niño and La Niña. It impacts flora and fauna in the Americas, West Africa, and beyond. For humans, it affects rainfall and humidity, aridity, temperatures, et cetera. In turn this affects harvest yields, fishing yields, construction activity, and more. In #TelluBase (https://lnkd.in/eVK3dfYa), we have many data series beyond the human condition in 218 countries, 2600 cities, and 2500 primary subdivisions (plus 25000 secondary subdivisions). One example are our monthly El Niño and La Niña data from 1950 and onward. The graph shows a yearly aggregation of the data starting in 2000. Why is this useful to have? Regression analyses with crop commodity prices show that some crop prices are strongly influenced by El Niño, and sometimes La Niña. It is also possible to predict both phenomena with better than 80% probability even though they are chaotic (impossible to know when they start). 2023 and 2024 have been especially strong El Niño years. This explains the spike in cocoa prices since harvest yields in western Africa are down severely. Tellusant has both the data and the econometric models. — — — [2024-10-23] #elnino #lanina #colombia #peru #business #weather #cocoa

Few executives can quickly rattle off how profits are generated. If they are asked in the elevator, they may say scale economies, or competitive advantage. Scale economies is sometimes true and is one type of competitive advantage. Competitive advantage in turn is one source of profit generation, but there are three others. Richard Makadok describes this brilliantly in an academic paper¹. We took the liberty to summarize some of his findings in this Quick Read. It is a simple and powerful logic. It is thought provoking and it is a good exercise to identify how business units within your company truly generate profits. — — — ¹ R. Makadok (2011): The Four Theories of Profit and Their Joint Effects, Journal of Management, vol. 37, no. 5, pp. 1316-1334. A great day for Massachusetts. Profs. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun won The Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2024 as announced in Stockholm today. Ambros is at UMass Chan Medical School and Ruvkun at Harvard Medical School. It again shows how our small commonwealth is the leading sciences location in the world. It is inspiring for us at 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁 to work in such an environment and to contribute in the field of management science. — — — [2024-10-07] #ambros #ruvkun #science #medicine #stockholm https://lnkd.in/d6mnFtXH

We celebrate our 𝟮𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 with a new library on our website: https://lnkd.in/eQzhaEm5. Quick Reads summarize important managerial and analytical issues on 2 pages. We focus on things you probably, not even with the best MBA, have seen before. We thus try to make them VRIO. − Valuable (we touch mainly on topics of major importance) − Rare (we usually have not seen the topic discussed before) − Inimitable (no one else could create the Quick Read without major effort: you pay us for the years, not for the minutes) − Organized (the website library) Where else can you, for example, learn about? ▪ The largest U.S. company ranking measured the correct way (and not the inane revenue metric). (for instilling pride in employees if you rank high) ▪ The water intake of humans based on temperature, humidity, height, weight, etc. (great for beverages companies) ▪ How to predict exchange rates? (for budget and strategic planning) We currently have materials for another 50-100 Quick Reads. Expect us to celebrate our 50th sometime mid-2025. The Quick Reads are intended for senior executives with lateral thinking capabilities, but many others with curious minds will enjoy them. And please contact us if you have any questions or needs. — — — [2024-10-01] #ceo #strategy #managament #analytics https://lnkd.in/eQzhaEm5

We are pleased to announce our strategic partnership with Berumen y Asociados. The purpose is to expand service line offerings, co-develop our client base in Mexico and beyond, and to build joint intellectual capital. Tellusant’s Executive Chair, Staffan Canback, says: “I started collaborating with Berumen in 2006. Over the years, my consulting firm leveraged Berumen’s market research capabilities for various purposes. Over the past year, Edmundo and I agreed that a closer collaboration is beneficial, especially in the Mexican market which is a priority for Tellusant.” Berumen’s Chair, Edmundo Berumen, adds: “we are impressed by Tellusant’s managed services, including TelluBase and PoluSim. We believe TelluBase can enhance our market research and other services by giving a detailed view of consumer classes in Mexico and beyond. We also see complementarity in our client bases with opportunities to go to market jointly.” The companies have started sharing intellectual property and conducted joint training sessions. The partnership was negotiated between Tellusant’s Chief Executive Officer, Philip Burgin-Young and Edmundo Berumen. Pictured are Edmundo Berumen (R), Chair of Berumen y Asociados, and Francisco Maciel (L), Country Manager for Tellusant Mexico. The share of e-commerce has stabilized with a trend above the pre-pandemic expectation. The uplift is 1 percentage point, or 7% in percentage terms. The graph shows developments in the U.S up to and including 2th quarter 2024. E-commerce understandably leapt when the pandemic made its mark and, while reverting back, is above the historical performance. Long-term, we see continued growth in e-commerce, covering more and more categories and gaining new customers. The underlying economics are too favorable for this not to happen. Going forward, we will not extend the covid line as it fades in importance (we will keep it up till 24Q2). — — — [2024-09-17] #ecommerce #strategy #management #business #ceo #cpg

Our second day in Panama was aimed at team building through joint experiences. ❶ Having drinks at the rooftop bar of CasaCasco after a long day in the field. ❷ The team on the Panama Canal on the way to the Monkey Islands wildlife sanctuary. ❸ A monkey spotted by Shane Ezepik. It is hard to spot the wildlife in the rain forest, but we did well. ❹ The team trekking in the rain forest. Hot and humid! ❺ Five of us went to the Miraflores Locks on the canal. ❻ A ship entering the locks. We watched a full cycle which takes around 45 minutes. We will post this on YouTube. We had a great day. We were in the field from 6:30 in the morning till 11 at night. — — — [2024-09-11] #retreat #panama #panamacanal #globalbusiness #strategy
