Dedicated to exonerating the innocence in Tennessee

About us

Tennessee Innocence Project is a non-profit dedicated to exonerating the innocence in Tennessee. Launched in February 2019, as the first full-time innocence organization in the state, the Tennessee Innocence Project represents men and women making claims of actual innocence. The Tennessee Innocence Project has three primary areas of focus: 1) Investigating and litigating wrongful conviction cases for those in Tennessee prisons to obtain exonerations, 2) Training law students and attorneys about how to litigate these cases and how to prevent future wrongful convictions, and 3) Effectuating changes that facilitate the discovery of wrongful convictions and remedies to the wrongfully convicted. Exonerations often take years to achieve and require countless hours of hard work by attorneys, investigators and volunteers. Please consider getting involved and supporting our mission.

  • We’re pleased to announce that Hayden MacMath has joined our Nashville office as our Office and Executive Support Coordinator! In this role, Hayden will offer essential support to our operations and finance team during an exciting time of growth at TIP. • The Tennessee Innocence Project would like to extend a special thank you to Vanderbilt University Law School, who has generously funded our Re-Entry Fellow position over the last year. This position, held by Madison Lowery, has made a tremendous impact by ensuring the success of our exonerees after their release from prison. Madison has connected our clients to essential dental and medical services, financial and mental health counseling, mentorship, and so much more.  As a valued member of our team, Madison is now stepping into a full-time staff attorney role with TIP! We are excited for her to continue her important work advocating for the rights of wrongfully convicted individuals across the state.

  • 🚨 Breaking News: Ricky Lee Webb's Conviction Overturned! 🚨 We are excited to announce that our client, Ricky Lee Webb, has had his wrongful conviction overturned. Convicted in 1976 for a rape and murder he did not commit, Ricky spent 46 years, 8 months, and 20 days behind bars, maintaining his innocence throughout. In 2021, Ricky entrusted the Tennessee Innocence Project to fight for his freedom. His legal team—Connor Webber, Quinn Carlson, and Jessica Van Dyke—worked tirelessly to overturn his wrongful conviction. We are proud to report that his convictions have now been overturned! On this Wrongful Conviction Day, we also honor other exonerees: Artis Whitehead, Joyce Watkins, Charlie Dunn, Shane Garrett, Wayne Burgess, and Claude Garrett, who collectively spent almost 147 years wrongfully imprisoned. Their stories highlight the urgent need for justice reform. There is still much work to be done. Many innocent people remain behind bars, and we will continue our relentless fight for their freedom. You can join us in this mission. Your support is vital in helping us prevent wrongful convictions and secure justice for those who have been wronged. Consider making a donation today to assist our efforts: https://lnkd.in/ecy37kyR
